Looks like neither Tavares nor Carlson will re-sign so why not swap the negotiating rights with each other and try to get a similar caliber player?

Aren't both still considering their current team as their most likely landing spots or at least one of them?

Backstrom and Kuznetsov make Tavares a luxury in Wash, where losing Carlson would open a major hole on the backend.

No thanks.

There is legitimate chance the isles can extend Tavares and imo loyalty + adding Lou are the 2 biggest reasons.

Carlson has no ties, no loyalty to the isles, so unlikely he accepts an extension.

Tavares may still resign, if these players want to test the free agency market they're going to test the free agency market. They get to choose where, who, how much, etc. Unless the players specify their interest to play there then I don't see the point.

Plus, does Washington really need another centre? I feel that money should go elsewhere.

Yeah first off, Washington has absolutely no need to go after Tavares with Backstrom & Kuznetsov already locking down the top two center spots.

Seems like OP just wanted to say "looks like neither Tavares nor Carlson will re-sign" and make a thread about it.

If Caps are going to lose Carlson, landing Tavares would be amazing. Would be a really bad defense but best offense in league
There's is no point in trading your only #1 D for a number 1 C if you already have 2 number 1 Cs . Plus Tavares will cost at least 2.5 million more than Carlson and the Caps already have to trade someone or buy out Orpik in order to sign Carlson.

Tavares at 11m?
Carlson is 8.5 tops. I don't see how Tavares can be 11m and Sid can be 8.7 mill

WHY???? The Caps are strong at center as it is with Kuzy, Backstrom and Eller. This makes absolutely no sense!

They need a qb of 2nd pp unit

Lose Carlson you have to replace with something big. Karlsson maybe but too much to give up

It's especially weird timing given the recent reports of Tavares and Lou being in constant discussions.

OP might have made more sense of the reports were the opposite, that Lou hadn't spoken to Tavares even once since he took the job.

Crosby's contract was signed 6 years ago. When it was signed it was 13% of the cap, and 11M is 13% of the cap now. The salary cap was almost 20 % less then. As far Carlson goes, he'd probably settle for less to stay on the caps, but on the open market he'd get close to 9M.

This makes zero sense, and who said either player isn't signing with the their respective teams. The Caps season ended a little over a week ago and the official cap number is not out yet. Give it some time. Damn.
