I mean, I get the logic <insert team> fans are pointing here as to why it's <insert term> years, but the odds of this deal being even decent when he's <insert age+term>are really, really low.

You forgot $. Otherwise, this is quite a useful template for high-profile free agent signings and resignings.

The "ground breaking" part of your observation is that you think he's going to go back to producing like he was the 2nd option behind Mike Green in his early 20's. And not the years between then and now, where he has been, and will continue to be, the bonafide #1 offensive option on the blueline.

Whatever you need to rationalize the terms...it's no big deal. You just won a cup. Congrats. Long time coming and well deserved. Sometimes that artificially inflates salaries too.

Behind A Tree
Knew this was happening once the Caps traded Orpik and Grubauer (Spelling?), solid move for them. Carlson's one of the better offensive dmen in the league.

Calling you out on completely bs cherrypicking isn't rationalizing anything

LOL. How is a guy having a career year during his contract year cherry picking? It happens all the time in every sport. Holy crap. Don't be so sensitive.

He's been a ~55 point defenseman for a while now while logging more and harder minutes in previous years and always raising his game in the playoffs. He's getting paid for the role he had on the team for a while not the extra 13 points he got this year lol.

Niskanen was actually signed by the caps after a career year following many years of suspect and sometimes borderline AHL play

Its not a career year by that much. In 2014-15 he was tied for 5th in scoring in the NHL among defensemen. He was also a point per game in the playoffs that season. The next season he struggled with a high ankle sprain but was still 11th in points per game on defense. So, 3 out of his last 4 seasons he has been an elite producer on defense.

Great example. You guys signed him and he's never hit 46 pts again. Thank you! Exactly my point.

Great stuff. Only time will tell whether Carlson's deal is reasonable for both sides or only one of them. It is front-loaded: $12m (all #s are salary + signing bonus) for 18/19 and 19/20; $8m for 20/21 and 21/22; and $6m for each of the final four seasons. Cap hit is $8m for 8 years, but the deal pays him (arguably) a bunch more than he's likely to produce for the first two seasons, and then levels out to the $8m amount for a couple of seasons, and finally dips down to the $6m amount that should make him a bargain if he ages reasonably well. The $6m payout for the last four seasons means he potentially can be traded without any sweeteners.

No way, He had careers highs in a contract year? That never happens. ANd they then never regress back to their mean.

Look for him to be a 30-40 point player next year...just like the rest of his career.

He had a 55 point season in 14/15 and in a injury plagued season had a 57 point pace in 15/16. Struggled with injuries in the 16/17 season and didnt look close to his best then had an excellent season in 17/18. Carlson getting above 60 next year wouldnt be very unlikely if he is healthy. He almost had the pace in 14/15 and 15/16. In 15/16 he would likely have gotten it if not for injuries that also made is play worse after he came out flying to start that year. In his 55 point season he only had half the PP time he had this year so with the same usage that year he would have been an above 60 point defenceman(Green was used most).

Carlson is also an all around defenceman and while hes sitting tied for 7th in PPG at 0,69 per game over the last 3 years(With Subban and Gostisbehere) for defencemen hes also the defenceman with the 26th most PK time in the league during those years and the Caps second most used after Niskanen on the PK. Of the top nine only Josi have more PK time and has 0,71 PPG almost tied with Carlson. Only Hedman of the other players is close in PK time to Carlson over those years with 517 minutes to Carlsons 552. Then you have PP specialists Gostisbehere and Klingberg who does not PK. The rest are used some on the PK(Karlsson, Burns, Letang, Subban), but a lot less than Carlson. The Caps PK have been the 5th best PK during those years to. So hes not only an offensive defenceman, but a player trusted in all situations.
