He's playing 19 minutes on a not good team, because they just traded a top 4 guy and really don't have anyone else.

You don't pay someone for 3 future years based on a light roster for 2 mos. That said, 3m isn't a huge overpay... just a bit of one.
19 minutes a night is what he's playing on the season as a whole. He's playing 23 minutes a night recently because they traded a couple guys at the deadline (and he's got 3 points in 7 games and a team-leading +5 in that span, so he's handling it pretty damn well), but even prior to the Orlov trade he was already playing 18:30 per game including 2:30 on the PK as part of the Caps top PK unit.

Also the Caps are bad because their offense sucks, not their defense. They're 13th in the NHL in GA/G, 10th in SA/G, and 9th in PK%. TVR's been a productive part of a pretty decent defense.

Committing $8M annually to Dylan Strome and TVR doesn't inspire a lot of hope in me personally. Both strike me as mildly overpaid going into their next deals. Not going to sink the Caps ship but both feel underwhelming from the teams perspective.

Grats to TVR but that seems a bit rich.
Also not sure this seasons shot blocking will continue next or if part was due to contract season. It's not horrible or anything but I still feel it is a bit much

They definitely wanted to reward him a little bit for playing for sub 1 million for them for the last 3 years (2 years as a very solid regular). The fact that he can line up at 2LD, 2RD, 3LD and 3RD as a right shot also helps, plus his game is a nice blend of grit and positional/mobile defense and he's decent enough with the puck.

Would have rather the broke the bank for Orlov and hit on a Mahura/Kovacevic/Schenn/TVR (from his sub 1 million days) project/rebounding vet for the 3rd pairing but can't complain about the contract as things stand.

Dude is playing 19 mins a game not exactly playing third pairing minutes. In the last five he has played over 22 mins 4 times. He has also put up pretty good results this season. Calling him a number 5 is a little disingenuous.

Posters said the same thing about Brett Kulak and he's been excellent value at 2.75m for the Oilers.

Teams need guys that can play up in the top 4 in a pinch. To call guys like Kulak and TVR bottom pairing guys like they offer the same result as 6/7/8 depth guys that sink when given extra mins is disingenuous but the norm around here.

In the end it's a slight overpay but also a reward as he's coming off a value contract and deserved to be rewarded. 1 more year and the cap jumps and we will see more guys getting around this number.

Do not let your clear and level-headed review get in the way of everyone’s agenda who hasn’t watched a minute that TVR has played this season has constructed for themselves and convinced themselves is infallible. Clearly they know better than you and everyone else who has watched him all season.

People in this thread are arguing he’s a $0.5M overpaid(?)!! Seriously? Has anyone here ever watched any NHL team in the Salary Cap era, like ever? TVR’s new contract, if he maintains his current level of play, is completely sensible.

Guy has 1+2 and is +7 while averaging almost 24 minutes of TOI per game after the introduction of Sandin.

This could very well be a solid deal if they stay as a D-pair for seasons to come.

Term is good, value is solid.
Not sure why some really dislike this.

TvR was good for the Caps even before they were struck with the injury bug, when they were a good team and safely in a playoff spot. This contract is not just based on current situation at all.

At worst it's half a million too much, at best it's a really good contract for a player that can play a top 4 role.

3M is a little much cap management wise if you just see him a as a good bottom pairing dman, but Caps like his versatility a lot.

Can play both sides, up and down, PK, and will babysit a rookie or journeyman to survive next couple seasons.

2-2,5 would have been what i expected, but thats not a deal breaker. They wanted to keep him so they paid little extra instead of risking someone else giving him that.

I was a little reluctant with TVR when he first signed with the Caps, however he's impressed me and earned this contract, especially with the blueline getting younger. His veteran experience is much needed.

TVR has been quite good since arriving, and showed himself to be remarkably versatile in either LD or RD roles, solid enough when bumped up during injury spells to the second pairing and not looking too out of place. It's a fair deal, I think. They think he can absorb more responsibility and play every day in that No. 4-6 range.

The Caps are in the process of remaking their defense, swapping a very good veteran player in his 30s who was about to hit his UFA years (Orlov) and price himself off the roster for a 22-year-old in Sandin. They're expecting Fehervary to continue absorbing more responsibility, and are promoting prospect Alexeev to full-time duties. Carlson, Jensen, and TVR will serve as the veterans on that corps. There's room for a cheap veteran No. 7, though Laviolette has always liked Matt Irwin in that role and this could continue.

I think the team wants to spend its cap space on a top-six forward acquisition. They want to be younger and a bit cheaper on the back end.

Good for TVR. Haven't seen him play this year but he's seems to be slowly trending in the right direction. Good things come to those who work hard, and he seems to be putting in the work. Very happy a blue collar guy is getting rewarded.

Fine if they dump a few 5m deals (Mantha, Oshie).
Oshie is a driving force of the team. They perform completely differently when he is in the line-up. Mantha on the other hand would be addition by subtraction if they could somehow unload that contract.
