...Caps made a Boo Boo here, imo...lack of Cap room is biting them in the arse, as unless Samsonov completely shytes the bed, he's getting a huge raise sooner than later...

We'll see. He had a great start to his rookie year and played well in a few playoff games last season but the year between that was something to forget. Missed bubble hockey because of an ATV accident, landed twice on the Covid last year, pretty pedestrian numbers when he did play... he had pretty much an entire calendar year of stunted development and it showed on the ice.

He has every tool you could want for him to be a very strong #1 but we'll see if he can put it all together on a consistent basis.

That's nearly 3x the Cap hit of Vanecek. It's not bad, just proves what a steal VV is.

Could be the black ace for a cup run
Huh? "Black Ace" for the playoffs typically means a minor league player that is called up as an emergency reserve. Samsonov will not be a minor leaguer this year, he will be the 1A in the Capitals goalie tandem. Did you mean "wildcard" or "dark horse" or something like that?

Capa playing it safe here. Have to think they are as worried about their goaltending as pitt and the flyers. Cap hit is fine.

That's the thing - I don't think he's good enough to be a starting goalie, and I'm not sure the Capitals think so either.

They know he’s good enough. He just has some maturing to do. It’s a good deal for the team and gives him another chance to prove himself. If all goes well he could be a $5-6m man next year.

Unless he plays better and more consistent next season anything more with any term attached would have been a big gamble.

Here’s the simple fact. If he plays like he played for decent stints in the few PO games last year the Caps window is still open. If he regresses significantly, ......well there’s still one thing on the team (player) to cheer for.

VV is a good soldier and deserves better then how some of the team and organization has done him. By way of lack of support and all-around GAF on the ice and bench.
