That's a great deal for Winnipeg. Sure it's probably gonna look bad close to the end of it but they get to keep him when he's still elite at a reasonable cap hit and it's short enough to never become a big boat anchor.

I am hoping this lowers the cost on guys like Laine, Marner and Nylander...none of whom are as good as Wheeler on either end of the ice.

Wheeler is a great player and a great captain. If this is true, I am very happy to have him as a Jet for the next 5 years. Deal is fair as he could probably get over 9 million during free agency. Cap problems are going to rear it's head quickly next year however.

Probably became a years vs average negotiation. He got higher average because Winnipeg only wanted a 5 year term.

Wheeler is quite the athlete and has no major injury history. He has also gotten better every season he's played. Maurice has even gone on record saying that he'd be a player that could play at an elite level well into his late 30s. The term doesn't concern me at all at this point.

It shouldnt ,the team will use its youth and bridge a player or two to afford him...He is an important piece they needed to keep ...
