With Tampa out, Calgary on the brink and Toronto in a rough fight mean Size > Skill?

Sure did. And the Jackets out possessed, out shot, and outchanced them in every game. Tampa was actually 4th in the league in hits, Columbus was towards the bottom. Tampa took the 5th most penalties whereas the Jackets were one of the least penalized teams in the league.

This narrative of a big heavy team pushing around a small skilled soft team is being overblown.
Youve gotta have high hockey IQ,and.I feel Vasilevsky was sub par this series

2006 - Carolina (Skill) beat out Oilers (Size)

2007- Ducks (Size) beat out Senators (Skill)

2008- Redwings (Skill) beat out Penguins (Size)

2009- Penguins (Size) beat out Redwings (Skill)

2010- Blackhawks (Bad goaltending) beat out Flyers (worse goaltending)

2011- Bruins (Size) beat out Canucks (Skill)

2012 - Kings (Size) beat out Devils (Skill)

2013- Blackhawks (Skill) beat out Boston (Size)

2014- Kings (Size) beat out Rangers (Skill)

2015- Blackhawks (skill) beat out Tampa Bay (skill)

2016 - Penguins (skill) beat out San Jose (Size)

2017- Penguins (skill) beat out Nashville (Playoff Rinne)

2018- Washington (size) beat out Las Vegas (size)

2019 first round - Size teams have won their series so far....

If anything size is becoming very underplayed around here.
Too much generalization here, the devils were old, the.bruins fell asleep for 30 seconds,it would translate better we looked at handling pressure

CBJ = size?

Cam Atkinson, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Artemi Panarin, Markus Nutivaara, and Alex Texier are all 6'0 or smaller. Not to mention the only "physical" players are Dubinsky, Foligno, Anderson, and Savard (and McQuaid, but he didn't play in the series).

The Jackets are way more of a skill team than a size team.

Blues aren't even a heavy team. The only heavy players they have are Maroon, Edmundson, and Bortuzzo.

Didn’t Tampa beat the big bad Bruins last postseason on route to the Conference Finals?

Also, Colorado doesn’t have a ton of size, but their speed and sheer determination and puck pursuit is causing the Flames fits.

I’m more of the opinion that it’s the speed that’s been overwhelming some of these more skilled teams rather than size. A guy like Paul Byron for instance plays bigger than what his size would suggest. His speed is his greatest asset though and it makes him a very effective player. Also, LA has a ton of size but they were last in the West this season.

You had bad goaltending for 2010 but not the 09 Pens and 14 Kings where Quick and Fleury were as terrible and had worse regular season stats than Niemi in those years?

not true if all other things are close to equal

the extra size, will drain the smaller player. The extra reach will make the smaller player work harder.
That's how I see it. Have your exeptional exceptions, otherwise go with big, strong, good skating with skill type players that can hold up and not disappear in the very physical playoffs.

These articles by "professionals" are so stupid, Pittsburgh just won back to back cups on skill, Chicago vs Tampa in the final wasn't too long ago, Washington has both. All that proves is that there's no one mold to build a cup winner, it's about adapting and getting the best players to show up.

Physicality gets amped up in the playoffs only, as you can't play it for 82 games. Hockey people have been saying it forever, the heavy game is hard to beat. People use those Pens teams as an argument against this, but they were one of the more physical and best defensive teams in those years. A very misunderstood team.

It's not about the size of the player, it's about the size of the game they play. You just don't want the players to be soft, regardless of their size.

The Bruins haven't been "big and bad" for a while

I think a lot of people only remember Niemi as being mediocre in 2010 and not Fleury in 09 or Quick in 14 because he's Antti Niemi. And Fleury had a cup finals run the year before (where he actually played better, despite losing in the finals) and had the better career, and Quick had the 2012 Conn Smythe run and the better career.

But you're right, it's often times forgotten about that 09 Fleury and 14 Quick weren't really anything great in their cup wins and really not better than Niemi in 10.

Lol wow where to start.

1. Colorado is nowhere big and mean. Calgary didn't lose because Colorado had more size lmao. Colorado's speed killed the Flames.

2. Tampa by far was the more physical team. Blue Jackets pretty much gave up hitting from Game 3. Tampa was running around like Wild Animals. Columbus did its job to take them off their game. They used skill to eventually end the series

3. Boston is nowhere near "Tough" anymore. That team is soft as butter now, contrary to what Bruins fans may still think. Probably still ego talking for a lot of bruins fans.

Leafs are outhitting the Bruins so far, and that's without Kadri too, who happens to be one of the Leafs biggest hitters

Why does it always have to be one extreme or the other for a bunch of people?

The best teams have a mix of the two. Of course, some teams will lean more towards one or the other, but no good team is heavily slanted one way or another.

I just find it hilarious 5 years ago, in terms of prospects, if you were small, you were pretty much dismissed, and if you were big but skated like shit, youd be a lock to be a regular. Now, every midget is apparently the next Gaudreau or Debrincat, and everyone thats mediocre at skating wont be able to keep up in “today’s NHL” (the new buzzword thats replaced “intangibles”)

And, now during this first round, we have a bunch of size threads again...

Whenever someone says you need this, that, and some intangible thing, the intangible thing you’re referring to is a spike in PDO.

There's less time and space in the playoffs (and less power plays) so if you play a skilled game based on the perimeter and slowing down the play you are going to struggle. Skilled guys who work off the rush and still go to the dirty areas will still have success, 'floaters' won't

All the top scorers in the playoffs are still the most skilled players on their respective teams..

So.. no. Skill is still king.
