Why don't the Flames sign Phil the Thrill?

League min, add scoring, which basically is the only thing Calgary needs? Still had 36 points last year. Can play a physical game...

Little piece like that might be the difference between scoring 2-3 a night and losing and 4-5 a night and winning.

Fine with playing any role, fine with one year contract. Really no downside at all, aside from taking a roster spot. (but what are the flames doing anyway?)

It has been reported today that Kessel has bought a house in Vancouver. Not sure what that means except, perhaps, that Calgary isn't on his radar.

I don't want any more veterans moving forward. Hopefully those days are behind this franchise.
No more slow and old 4th liners that don't contribute on the score sheet and just take stupid penalties. It's gotten us nowhere for countless years. I like the direction we're currently going.
We still have Pelts and Coronato to get back up to the NHL, no need for Phil the Over the Hill....

I mean for 1, he’s have to actually want to player in Calgary.

Not sure what would set them apart from anyone else looking for cheap depth.

2) he’s not the piece to get the flames over, so what’s the point

Kessel doesn’t really bring offense at an NHL level anymore, 36 points is pretty bad for a guy only bringing that to the table because he’s horrid at everything else. Seriously, how he managed to be a -7 on a team with a +42 goal differential is extremely telling, and Vegas needing only 4 games to see they needed to bench him for the remainder of the playoffs even more so.

To put how bad 36 points in today’s NHL is in perspective, AJ Greer is on pace for 29. No team has ever added him for his offensive punch.

I'd offer him a contract, with a promise of attempting to trade him to a contender. Get something for nothing.

Coronato, Solo, Wolf, Poirier- these guys before signing some washed up fat vet.

Also, Conroy better be using that cap space for intelligent trade deals.

Hopefully 3rd time lucky!

I would suggest Perry before Kessel , whatever drunken stupidity he got into there were no charges laid or even rumoured so it sounds like a woke firing by an over sensitive guilt ridden organization . Time was not that long ago drunken stupidity was a pretty typical thing in the league , somebody is going to get him for league minimum pro-rated

At first I was very against this idea but after watching how abysmal our PP is… it wouldn’t be the worst thing. I think we have to trust Huska that he isn’t Darryl and that he won’t start giving Kessel playing time over our young guys but just gets used as a 12th F/ PP specialist.

For those saying Coronato should get time over him, I think Coronato is not quite NHL ready yet, and even if he is, having Kessel to rotate in when our PP is really struggling like it is now

As much as I’d be okay riding it out and sticking with young guys, the reality is the West is side open this year and so if a no-risk, League min PP specialist is available I think we might as well look into it

Perry had 25 points over a full 82 game season before he went to Chicago. It took gifting him top usage (almost 4 minutes of powerplay time per game) in Chicago to get him back to just a 45 point pace. Hard pass on him.

Kessel scored 2 powerplay goals all of last season. Not exactly a hidden weapon there.

Seriously, I’m not on the anti-veteran rhetoric that’s been circling around here, but have people watched these two recently? Neither are boosting an NHL offense.

Enough with the Phil Kessel talk. 36 years old and still unsigned... even at league minimum.. 'Nuff said

He'll want more than the league min and 2/3 of the league, ie. the teams who would sign a veteran, don't have the space.

Awful, laughable take.

Kessel is going to push us from scoring 3 to 5 goals a game?

Why in the holy hell would we sign him when we don't even have room to bring up Coronato let alone when Pelts also comes back.
