Older, veteran players as AHL captains has its obvious benefits:

Tom Kostopoulos is still teaching young Penguins. But now he's doing it as a coach.

Now, they don't have to coach after they retire, but at least these younger players had someone to learn from.

Barracuda have 9 year vet as their captain, John McCarthy.

(Excluding ~1/2 season he spent with AHL Chicago as he was signed by NHL St Louis, he's been in Sharks organization since he started playing. St Louis assigned him to Sharks' AHL franchise mid-way through January of season)
