Potvin was great at everything. Coffey the best offensively and Bourque was great to at everything but not in Potvin level.

Question do they still chant Potvin sucks when Islanders play Rangers at MSG??

Offensively with the likes of Gretzky sure.
Both Bourque and Potvin were much better all around D-man.

How was Bourque overrated? He got Norris votes every single season of his career, never finishing lower than 7th & was an all around force. Literally carried the Bruins to the finals.

Peak? Potvin. He was the closest to peak Orr - offensively and defensively.
Longevity - Bourque.

I feel like Coffey gets underrated here because people assume he either:

A) Was a product of Gretzky

B) Was Marc-Andre Bergeron levels of awful on defense just because he had such great offensive numbers

Coffey was an elite offensive player, and while he benefited from playing with Gretzky as any player would, he was absolutely elite offensively on his own, away from Gretzky as well.

And he was one of the best skaters in NHL history, that alone allowed him to be a decent defender... not elite but definitely not trash.

I feel like Coffey's time in Detroit & Philly was a bit underwhelming (32-36 for a defenceman isn't that old at all).

Bourque was a force every year he was in the league. Great offensively obviously. Very darn good defensively too.

To me Potvin wins this poll. He was the leader on those Isles teams. He excelled at everything he did. He was also physical and nasty when he had to be.

So in summary:

1. Potvin
2. Bourque
3. Coffey

For peak it's easily Denis Potvin. The only reason he doesn't have 4 Norris trophies to his name is because he had to compete against Orr for one of them.

People forget that Coffey wasn't an instant hit in the NHL like the other 2 guys and Bourque joined an already pretty decent team.

Potvin transformed the NYI from a struggling expansion team to a SC dynasty.

Potvin at his peak was simply amazing all on his own.

I didn't realize that Potvin drafted and developed Bossy, Goring, Trottier, etc. Bourque only got Neely. Bourque should have drafted and developed better.

At his absolute best, Potvin was the most complete of the three IMO. Not only was he elite offensively and defensively, but he could hit like a Mack truck.

I love Bourque, but as NyQuil said, Potvin was just as good, and was also next level mean.
Coffey was a great player in his own right, but he comes third here.
