Who drafted or originally signed the players on the 2022-23 NHL rosters? And how many of those players were with their original drafting/signing team?

To explain the numbers, using Anaheim, 29 players they drafted or originally signed made opening rosters. The breakdown of the 29 players was 15 forwards, 12 dmen and 2 goaltenders. Of the 29 players, 11 of those were on the Ducks opening roster.

Gives an idea who likes to build their roster through the draft (i.e. the Islanders)

Some other numbers that I ran on the opening 2022-23 rosters (unrelated to the draft). The number for each team represents the number of NHL goals each opening roster scored in 2021-22, grouped by division.

Found it interesting there was little change in the team averages from last season, scoring up slightly.

Misc: By my count, there were 1,058 different players in the NHL this past season (108 goaltenders, 334 dmen and 616 forwards).

They scored 8,248 goals and totaled 22,185 points

121 players made their NHL debut (93 drafted players and 28 undrafted) compared with 170 last season.

Nice to see some 100 point scorers, even a dman!

I missed that update. So the habs are still at the bottom and by quite a margin. Seems the gap is actually increasing. The 2007 draft class fading out doesn't help I guess.

The Habs added several rookies last season and it looks like there will be several more getting a chance in the next couple of years. They have had a real hard time finding offensive players in the draft really for decades, especially centres.

Was interested to note above (post 51), two of the three teams with the fewest number of their own drafted players in the opening lineup made the Stanley Cup finals. I still believe in the importance of the draft but teams are finding other ways to build strong rosters.

I feel like there's more to the bolded.

- A team that contends AND drafts well would be able to flip good prospects for pieces that can help now. We're seeing it with Colorado in the past year with flipping guys like Barron, Newhook to Montreal and converting those players into solid pieces for the now.

- A team that contends would have less spots on their roster by default. When looking at basement teams, there's a lot of prospects who play much bigger roles than they would on a better team. Some that even make the NHL due to a team being in a rebuild phase.

- There's an aspect of quality vs quantity. Is a team with 15 "drafted" depth players more "draft built" than a team of 5 core drafted superstars?

And to reiterate on that first point, the Panthers don't have much "own drafted" players, but most of their core forwards come from trades where the main pieces were drafted players.

They kind of assembled a D out of nothing though it seems (beside Ekblad)

Thanks for the update. Habs getting a solid lock on the bottom spot.
Not surprising. Timmins was probably the worst head scout in the league, but he had this reputation of being one of the best. Most of the fan base bought it and defended him to the bitter end, coming up with all kinds of excuses for him. He had one good draft and milked another decade plus with the team because of it.

Roster building is an interesting topic, would make for a good discussion, probably on the main boards. The trading of draft picks and drafted players could be a whole different analysis if someone wanted to take the time. Folks can draw their own conclusions from the numbers.

Totally, and thanks for sharing your results! Its cool to see a more objective way to evaluate team's scouting/development than by "feeling"

Might be a good indicator of teams on the rise and the opposite as well

Who drafted or originally signed the players on the 2023-24 opening NHL rosters? And how many of those players were with their original drafting/signing team?

To explain the numbers, using Anaheim, 31 players they drafted or originally signed made opening rosters. The breakdown of the 31 players was 13 forwards, 15 dmen and 3 goaltenders. Of the 31 players, 14 of those were on the Ducks opening roster.

Gives an idea which rosters have been mainly built through the draft (i.e. the Flyers)

Some other numbers on the opening 2023-24 rosters (unrelated to the draft). The first column of numbers for each team represents the number of NHL goals each opening roster scored in 2022-23, grouped by division. The column on the far right represents the actual number of goals the team scored in 2022-23.

Interesting that the league is a bit older this year, led by Sid & his Pens.

Post #52 above has the numbers from this time one year ago for a comparison.

For a team rebuilding I was surprised Detroit had so few homegrown players on the roster.
Pulled up last years list and from the 10 homegrown players that started the season, 4 guys moved on: Tyler Bertuzzi, Filip Hronek, Filip Zadina & Gustav Lindstrom and Elmer Soderblom was sent down. They have added a lot of veterans to their lineup the last two years.

Could you factor in where these teams drafted on average in each round.
Seems like I have seen that comparison some where, it`s not something I have looked at it or kept the data for. It`s complex and not sure what it shows. I made a comparison years ago on strength of draft based on the number of NHLers who had played at least 250 games from each draft and there was a significant variance over the years. And about 15% of the league is made up of undrafted players like Artemi Panarin and Sergei Bobrosky. Above are comparisons that I do for myself and just add them here for folks that are interested. Someone may know a site that has the data you`re looking for.

Some new numbers for this past season...

Season stats for 2023-2024 NHL regular season by Original Drafting/Signing team Comparison

To explain the table, using the Ducks as an example, 37 players drafted or originally signed by them played in the NHL in 2023-24 regular season (3 goaltenders+17 dmen+17 forwards). They played a total of 1,867 games. They combined for 233 goals and 724 points, broken down by dmen (58+327) and forwards (175+396).

Also included in the total points are goaltenders assists (62 total plus Tristan Jarry’s goal).

Misc: By my count, there were 1,022 different players in the NHL this past season (98 goaltenders, 316 dmen and 608 forwards).

They scored 8,086 goals and 21,764 points (compared with 8,248 goals and 22,185 points last season)

119 players made their NHL debut (93 drafted players and 26 undrafted) compared with 121 last season.

Cool to see two players with 100 assists.

Which would be valid for some players. I remember Martin St Louis in a Penguins training camp at the beginning of his pro career. Then he went to Calgary but became the hall of famer in Tampa.

What I do above is basic and easy to trace. Someone could certainly look at the stats from a different angle, it gets subjective though which is something I do try to remove from the comparisons that I make. That is a legitimate point though.

Edit: Thinking on this some more...many NHL players were 'developed' before they turn pro. Whether in the CHL, US colleges/universities or the European leagues much of their key development was before they were signed or drafted by an NHL team.

The inspiration for the draft comparisons was to try to identify the better drafting teams. Just another way of breaking down and reviewing stats.
