...and just for fun who do you think Dubas would draft (if he were still here)?

Question about the draft:

Answers:

1. You
2. Treliving
3. Dubas

I'll go first:

1. David Rienbacher RHD Kloten Switzerland
2. Calum Ritchie C Oshawa Generals
3. Dubas will use his 1st round pick to get out of a bad contract (Kris Letang)

Yeah I know about that. I posted the thread when BT was hired.

The fact that he's not there physically means nothing. The scouts have their list/suggestions, the management team comes to a consensus, and the preferred player gets drafted. Are you suggesting that Treliving will be held up in a sensory deprivation chamber while the draft goes on?

1. Lukas Dragicevic or Oliver Bonk or Caden Price
2. Gabe Perreault
3. Daniil But

I've still got my eyes on potential sabotage for our 1st rounder. All it would require is taking some physically talented prospect rated down due to flaws easily spotted during the interview process and background checks. You rate him in the top 10 when he should be rated in the late rounds.

1. I want Gabe Perreault. There's a small chance he's still available, as I've seen lists/mocks where he's in the 20s. If he's there and they take someone else, I'll be shocked.

2. I think Treliving's team will take Quentin Musty, as he seems like the most likely 'power forward' type that will be available in our range. Just seems like that's wat most people think TOR is missing.

3. I think Dubas would have targeted Nick Lardis. In our range, he's the small skilled pick. That's on-brand for Dubas.

Toronto will continue to stock up Phoenix Arizona connections,

Ethan lead team Canada at the recent 2022-23 U-18 Hlinka Gretzky Cup tournament with 6 goals in 5 games helping the team win Gold.

Scouting report

If there’s one player that you would want on your team, but would absolutely hate to play against, Sherbrooke Phoenix forward Ethan Gauthier definitely fits that description as he’s always a thorn in the opposition’s side.

The son of former NHLer Denis Gauthier, Ethan is always a dominant factor as he’s consistent every single shift. The first thing that stands out is his persistent and ruthless ability to get in on the attack and establish a forecheck. He’s constantly involved, digging for loose pucks in the corners, engaging in battles to separate the player from the puck to regain possession. The work ethic and drive that he possesses will have teams calling, that’s for sure.

Gauthier is very crafty and deceptive with the puck on his stick. He has great control and soft hands to make moves around defenders and has the awareness to always carry the puck to open ice for prime scoring chances or setting up plays. He displays great patience and doesn’t force plays if there’s nothing there. He’ll take the time to fall back and wait for help to arrive before he makes his move. He may not be the biggest player, but he isn’t afraid to make a hit and apply pressure in the offensive zone.

Gauthier has great off the puck awareness to provide support for his teammates. He utilizes the spaces very well, finding the open lanes in order to receive a pass. He’s constantly gliding around and following the play in order to keep things moving on the cycle and in transition. He can provide a strong presence in front of the net and does a great job at generating second or third scoring opportunities. He can drive hard to the net and has the ability to make moves in tight spaces on the goaltender.

Strengths

  • Work ethic and drive
  • Puck pursuit and possession
  • Hands and playmaking abilities
  • Effective 200-foot game
  • Puck skills

Why was he playing for Canada if he was born in Arizona?

Duel citizenship.

He is the son of former NHL Denis Gauthier.

His father was born in Montreal QC and they must live in Quebec as his son grew up playing hockey in Canada.

However Denis was playing for Phoenix in

When his son Ethan was born Jan 26, 2005.

Ethan Gauthier: Gauthier’s father, Denis Gauthier, played in the NHL for 11 seasons with the Calgary Flames, the Coyotes, the Philadelphia Flyers and Los Angeles Kings. The 5-feet-11 forward is consistently protected as a first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

PS. Shane Doan and Ethan's father were teammates in the NHL.

I like sons of former players. Is he slated to go around where the Leafs pick?
I also like strong hockey bloodlines as these kids also have in house role models and teachers.

Leafs currently pick #28 overall and here are Ethan Gauthier draft rankings among many scouting agencies.

TSN Bobby Mac and Craig Button have him as high as 16/17 but others including Sportsnet have him going around on right on our pick. :)

Just don't trade it away. Dubas did that enough already. Still can't believe we traded Sandin away for a late first

Getting a first for Sandin is pretty good value. The prospect we get with that first probably will be more impactful for our team vs Sandin. Sandin just was never going to be a top 4 dman for us.
