What's your Carlson walk away number?

At what AAV do you let Carlson walk?

That’s a lot of young guys, who are also small, but both are super intriguing, I definitely get that.

Have a hard time seeing two of Gersich and AJF making the big club immediately.

Oh, I doubt it, too. I've seen a lot of those two guys over the last couple years and Stephenson this year, and they can all forecheck, have serious wheels, and distribute/shoot/carry the puck very well.

Size may be an issue if you're thinking of them as a traditional Caps 4th line, but they have it in them to be more than just a minute-chewing, get-it-in-deep line. I don't see it happening either, but in a world where DSP and Beagle might be cost prohibitive, it's nice having these guys in our back pocket.

So 1 season of Karlsson is better than 8 seasons of Carlson ?
Not what I said. But if Carlson asks for outrageous sums of money or insists on testing the market, there may not be a ton of options. The window is now, with Holtby and Backstrom on contracts that expire after the 2019-20 season and Ovechkin and Niskanen expiring the year after that. It wouldn't be that outrageous to take another all-in shot with Karlsson on a one-year deal.

As one of the more vocal Carlson posters, I want to point out I don't care about his cap hit. It's the term that more concerns me. I know we don't know what the cap/CBA will be like for the later years of a contract, but hopefully the stars align for BMac and whatever he does, works out for the best.

I have been strongly predicting Carlson bolts since I don't see BMac offering up more than the Kuz 7.8 ish and feel George or someone else will step up with a near max contract offer. But hearing that Carlson has a newborn has me thinking he is ripe for a "I don't feel like moving right now" discount to stay here. With a cup ring, his wife and life > Hockey more than ever right now.

Pros for Carlson staying from his POV:

He's comfortable here with this group of guys/staff, only knows Caps org.

His wife is from DC.

He lives in DC year round.

Only Caps can give him the 8th year.

Cons:

He probably could get higher AAV if he shops around but 7y max

Perhaps he wants a new challenge

I don't care one bit about Carlson's term. With basically no blue chip prospects, an aging core and that ridiculous Oshie contract, this team is probably going to need a major rebuild in four years or so. Now's the time to win while they can.

You give Carlson a 8yr deal and you have top pairing D for that rebuild already in place. Don't forget the cap will only go up, and if we are rebuilding Ovie/Backy are gone and that's a big chunk of change to spend on young talent. Carlson could be the next Orpik with the next next corp

Exactly. And speed has never been a big part of his game, so I don't see his game completely degrading.

I think 8x8 but I might have to shade just like 100k higher. He showed me a lot this year I was a bit down on Carlson last year.

Carlson is very good, but his numbers are inflated by playing the point on the power play -- serving up one-timers to Ovie, and benefitting from the finishing skills and space freed up by some of the other guys on that unit. his actual defensive numbers are not anywhere near superstar caliber.

i don't like to buy high. i would probably let him walk, unless he was willing to cut us a great deal, which he's not.

he's not irreplaceable, certainly not at the price he'll be commanding.

How is Carlson rated defensively over the complete term of his recent contract? Since D is at the root of his job, I think a full review is in order. He seems good to very good to me (not great), but maybe advanced stats can help. Also I am interested in overall ES numbers, again at the root of his job. I look at the advanced stats and I am lost - maybe they are all meaningless after Orpik being the worst player in the NHL for much of last year.

The advanced stats rank our defenseman

Carlson
Niskanen
Orlov
Kempny
Jerabek
Orpik
Djoos
Bowey

So pretty much how I would rank them based on eye test. Maybe Jerabek too high but he didn't really play in enough games.

Carlson may not be irreplaceable but what's the list of players that could single-handedly replace him? Burns, Subban, Doughty, Karlsson, Klingberg, Pietrangelo, Byfuglien, Jones, Weber & Hamilton. Maybe Dumba, Ekblad, Parayko or McAvoy could grow into it as well. So that's 14 defensemen, with some questions as to whether some would be capable of it just yet or, in the case of Weber, whether the future return would necessarily be comparable. They could attempt to split up the responsibilities between more of a PP specialist and then another PKer type but that weakens the overall quality of the blueline and second pair.

I think he's a must sign. We can make ideal criticisms of his game--he's never been an overly strong possession defenseman 5-on-5 compared to the very elite--but it's not like Niskanen or a fairly generic top 4 RHD are capable of being the guy on PP1 just because of the talent around them. There's no Reirden type internal replacement to where they can afford to coolly back away should negotiations force them into a disadvantageous position. It has to get done. I'd hope that the OEL contract would be enough, if not 8x8. Anything more than that and it's really pushing it. That would already be a top 15 AAV. I think he conceivably could make a case for Subban type money but not here.

We're a bit unlucky that the second best UFA defenseman is...Mike Green

I want Carlson here but if he tests the market I think he could easily get 9.5M.
