About even. In the modern era only Joe Thornton has approached 100 assists, and only Ovechkin/McDavid have approached 70 goals.

They’ve both been done around the same amount of times (13-14 times), and neither in the last 30 years, so equal in rarity.

But 70 goals just pops out more. Certainly will be more talked about both in the lead up to the milestone and in the history books.

You can only score a goal by scoring a goal, you can get an assist in two ways through primary or secondary. Now if it was 100 primary assists….

There are more players who have scored 70+ goals in the history of the sport. Gretzky, Hull, Selanne, Mogilny, Kurri, and Lemieux have all scored 70 or more goals.

100+ assists is technically more impressive from a historical perspective.

Intuitively, I’d expect 70 goals to be more rare since defensemen can’t score 70 goals, but could get 100 assists. However, only three guys have ever scored 100 assists and eight have scored 70 goals. 70 goals is probably more like 95 assists, which Oates, Thornton, LaFonatine and Gilmour all reached.

That’s what I’m thinking. If Thornton had 4 more assists in 2005-06 is that better than Matthews getting 70 goals now? I don’t believe so.

Oates peaked at 97 assists for the Bruins in 92-93, very close but didn't make it over the hump. Still a very impressive career for an undrafted player. One of my favorite Bruins of that era.

Not anywhere close to as flawed as your crazy example is. But sure if a 12 year old girl made it into the NHL and scored 70 goals or 100 assists I would be blown the **** away.
