What wrong with "Mitch'in" Marner?

He seems very tentative to initiate or receive any type of physical contact.

Of course he is extremely skilled, but in order to win playoff rounds you of course have to be willing to take hits to make plays and win board battles. I don’t think Mitch does either of those 2 things. He is an ‘open-space’ type of player.

i wonder what type of value they could get for him at this point. the book is out on him and he only has 1 year left at $10.9m. he could still be valuable to a team that need more talent to get into the playoffs or a team that needs a star player. id like to see utah take a swing, lots of cap space and futures.

I can't see Bill Armstrong going after this player

The players in toronto kept getting paid without results in the hopes they would achieve said results.

Unfortunately the results never came.

I was looking at per 60 stats and it was insane the dropoff:
Matthews goes from BY FAR the best scorer at 2gp/60 to 25th 1.2gp/60, from 8th in p/60 to 44th in p/60
Marner goes from 12th in p/60 to 33rd, he goes from 102 in g/60 to 197th in g/60 (just ahead of Rielly at 202 in g/60)

Unfortunately the core as a whole are basically 40-60 best NHL players (come playoff time) while being paid like top 5 players.

Their actual true salaries should be:
Matthews 9.5
Marner 8
Nylander 8
Tavares 7

With the saved 14+ million they could actually get a 1D to help Rielly and upgrade the goaltending or get more depth scoring (since we know the core won't show up).

With Hyman's goal yesterday he has 6
Toronto has 6 goals TOTAL this playoffs

McDavid and Drai have 16 points
Toronto as a team have 17 points (meanwhile they have 4 guys getting paid like McDrai)

Drai and McDavid at 20 million have 162 points in 102 playoff games

Matthews, Tavares, Marner, Nylander at 44 million have 158 points in 180 playoff games

Personally I would go nuclear and try and trade as many of them as I could get equal-greater value from, Tavares would just be dumped at 5.5 for a late draft pick

He’s always been meh, I never got the allure of him especially at the price. Seems like the type of player that needs to be coddled and carried to have any success in game. The juice isn’t worth the squeeze describes him perfectly.

People are really selling him short here. He has been massively overrated when people have compared him to Matthews, especially those insisting he carried Matthews which was always laughable, but he he hasn't looked close to his regular self most of this season, had a brief stretch where he was looking dominant but then had that high ankle sprain and has looked even worse since returning. Anyone thinking he was going to magically flip a switch these playoffs was always going to be disappointed with where his game is at right now. He usually is much better than people on here give him credit for though, he's a two way winger who's elite 5on5, on the PP and on the PK.

I just don’t think a 70 point special teams specialist is worth 10 mil but I appreciate the cap wasted from a non leafs fan perspective.

They're not, Marner goes from 12th to 33rd season to playoff p/60 and 102 g/60 to 197th g/60. This isn't one bad playoffs, this is a career of underperforming.

If he and the rest of the fraud four didn't nickle and dime the Leafs and took their real salaries (relative to their playoff performances):

Matthews 9.5
Marner 8
Nylander 8
Tavares 7

We wouldn't be in this situation because we could get help for the team, unfortunately he and the rest of them care more about money than winning; as seen by their performances in unpaid overtime (playoffs) every year

70 point? Not sure where you're getting that from. His point totals the last 6 seasons...

94 in 82 games
67 in 59 games
67 in 55 games
97 in 72 games
99 in 80 games
85 in 69 games

Marner had 10 points in his first 4 games against Tampa last year. He's had a series with 11 points in 6 games, 9 points in 7 games, and 8 points in 7 games. He doesn't perform like this every time like people pretend but he has struggled more than we would've liked.
