They have a mediocre core and no gems from the draft... no up-and-comers ready that will stand out. Like some have said, it's better they finish at the bottom and draft a superstar. The Leafs haven't had one of those for a while. Maybe they won't mess up a #1 selection (top 1-3) in the draft this time?
The problem is the ownership doesn't allow it and the GM feels pressure to make moves just so they aren't at the bottom or to try and make the playoffs yet finish out by a few points. Thus, they only get a fair draft position at best and miss out on star players once again. No one wants to admit they are not contenders so it's better to improve via the draft - and get some talent!
