The hype for Coach Prime goes to a new level this week as ESPN finally gets in on the game. Both Game Day and Big Noon Kickoff are in Boulder for the return of the Rocky Mountain Showdown as #18 Colorado hosts their in-state rival Colorado State. It’s the first time since 2019 the series is being played, and is usually played in Denver, but this year is on-campus. However, ESPN obviously did not have the foresight Fox did, and scheduled the game before the season for After Dark, this is a 10pm EDT start. This is also the first time Fox is doing BNK from a game they’re not covering. The Buffs are 23.5-point favorites
The slate this week is actually pretty brutal.
Gus and Joel are in Champaign for #7 Penn State @ Illinois for the noon kickoff. This is their first meeting since the “9 overtime” game in 2021 that Illinois won 20-18. Penn State are 14.5-point favorites.
#14 LSU is in Starkville for a rivalry game against Mississippi State, which should be an interesting matchup after their loss 2 weeks ago. They roughed up Grambling last week. LSU -9.5
#15 Kansas State had a short line last week but covered vs. Troy, this week they are only 3.5-point favorites at a Mizzou team who played a close game vs. MTSU last week. K-State won 40-12 last year.
#3 Florida State come north at noon to challenge Boston College to cover a 26-point spread.
#1 Georgia will finally play someone half-serious, their SEC opener at 3:30 on CBS vs. Spencer Rattler and South Carolina. They’re favored by 27.5. Developing theme now.
#10 Alabama comes off their roughest loss in like 10 years by making a rare trip to a G5 school. I think this is the first time under Saban they’re doing this. They have a 3:30 start in Tampa against South Florida. ABC putting this one up against CBS, Bama are 32-point favorites.
The Beavs also play in this slot on FS1, ranked #16, hosting the Aztecs from San Diego State.
#20 North Carolina has a short line, they are -8 hosting Minnesota after getting another scare from Appalachian State last week. They paid for it by dropping 3 spots.
When #8 Washington and Michigan State scheduled each other, they probably thought it would be one of the top games of the week, but maybe MSU is a bit fortunate after ousting Mel
Tucker that thru get to hide a 5pm start on Peacock (which also has Notre Dame this week). Washington favored by ‘just’ 16.
Ok, the actual big one this week looks like it’s in Gainesville. Their annual rivalry game against #11 Tennessee, favored by 6.5. Chris and Kirk are on the scene for ESPN in prime time. Or pre-Prime Time this week. It better end on time.
ABC is stuck with an unranked renewal of the Backyard Brawl, Pitt is at West Virginia this year. They won last year, WVU is favored this year by 1.5, but both teams have already lost a game. NBC’s millions are going toward Syracuse @ Purdue.
Finally, #4 Texas is back - on Longhorn Network. They welcome a team who did them a solid 2 weeks ago defeating a rival, Wyoming, favorites by 29.5.
Good luck finding those competitive games! No ranked matchups this week.
