OT: Visiting Edmonton

Go to a place called 'original joes'. It's good food and it's well priced for the portions they serve. Almost everyone I know loves the place, there are quite a few however but i recommend that you go to the one downtown as it's the original one in edmonton.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but a friend's second hand request stumped me the other day. They asked, on behalf of a friend, for good Gretzky related sites to see in Edmonton. I'd be curious if any posters can think of any good suggestions?

There is the obivious: Rexall place. It has the banners, statue, and the "Gretz" welded onto the players bench.
"Gretzky Drive" sign on Capilanno as well perhaps?
Slightly related might be the giant Stanley Cup by United Cycle.
Any other murals or such around the city?

I think the rumors of a Gretzky's restaurant in the new arena distict is a great idea. The Toronot location has a lot of cool nicknacks, and serves as a pseudo museum.

^^St Josephs basilica where Wayne and Janet got married would be an obvious one. There was what resembled a parade for royalty leading to the Basilica on the wedding day.

WEM skating rink where they so often had public practices another.

I believe Molsons house where the Gretzky is traded presser occurred is torn down. I'm not sure though, maybe its still there.

Commonwealth Stadium where they had fan filled momentous Stanley Cup celebrations would be another. But a person would also go there to see where the Heritage Classic was played including Gretz decades later.

Gretz and Lowe also used to live in a condo tower its around 118th street and 100th ave I believe. It was just across from Park Place.

Sam Abouhassen Tailors is still around where Gretz and teammates always got outfitted.

Famous Gretzky prints done by Andy Warhol are currently in the Pop Art collection @ AGA.

Depending on your age/interests.......... Ive always had fun at Northlands (horse racing). Theyve got a decent buffet along with drinks etc all in an enclosed weather friendly environment. They will also take you on a tour if you are able to request one which was interesting/informative. Of course there's also the gambling.

There are casinos spread throughout town, some of them like Century or River Cree also have entertainment which is usually fairly reasonable while still being fun. If you are younger/adventurous you could go down to Whyte ave and take in some Bulldogs at Julio's, as well as some world class blues at Blues on Whyte (The Commercial).

Then there is the mall, but I would stay far away from that place, especially without kids.

World waterpark in WEM is an absolute must.
A walk on the river valley could be ok if you run out of things to do.
A wildcard suggestion would be outdoor paint balling, its awesome for all ages. Not sure if you have much of it in NYC.

NYC is actually one of the safest cities in America now. Really impressive what they've done in that regard.

The person above, "Popo" was asking what notable places had been associated with Gretzky in Edmonton. So I provided the typlcal kind of list that would be found regarding a famous persons past local haunts. My post was in response to the thread bump, not to the OP of the thread, in that post.

I don't get your issue. Its not something I would do but sometimes people are interested in the players past associated places. c'est la vie. I think the list is reasonable from that end.

NYC is actually one of the safest cities in America now. Really impressive what they've done in that regard.

Its changed a lot. I was there in the mid nineties. And Ive been twice in the last two years. Its a very changed place. We walked around everywhere at all hours....totally safe. In Manhattan and New Brunswick NJ anyways. Took the subway all over. It's a great place.

My question would be are you and your family big hockey fans?

Edmonton obviously isn't that comparable culturally to New York but if you are really into hockey I would recommend checking out the Oil Kings schedule, the UofA Golden Bears (fantastic quality) of even some AJHL level hockey. Most nights in Edmonton you can find some high quality hockey

If you are here for significant time (4+ days) you almost need to take a couple of days and see Banff or Jasper

If you're at all interested in surfing, WEM offers a surf club in at their waterpark. When I was still working there, you had to book decently far in advance to get in but it would be a good idea to call and see what the wait time is like if that's something that interests you.

I'd recommend the museum to any visitor to Edmonton for it's unique architecture.
Plus you can cross the street and stroll through City Hall, which is also spectacular achitecture. Hard to believe it is over 20 years old and still so sleek. Eager to see that block once the Milner get's redeveloped as well.
