Man our prospect pool got way worse over the past year.

How so?

I mean we lost Shink and McCann but,

Boeser- good -->great
Demko- good -->great
Tryamkin- unknown-->very legit prospect
Subban-good in Jr --> good in AHL
Brisebois-mature captain of his team-->even taller and heavier and on WJC radar
Olsen- late round pick--> actually a decent prospect
Gaudette- who is this guy? Heard he hated the Canucks--->did very well in the NCAA and he doesn't hate the Canucks
Neill-Late pick who cares--> actually has upside
Gaunce-bottom 6 centre maybe ---> actually had decent offensive output at the AHL level
Jasek- meh----> what more doe you want from him?
Stukel-has upside
Lockwood-has upside
Juolevi-before our best prospect at D was subban----> joulevi is the real deal
Stecher-the best college FA available according to numerous reports.

So yeah McCann and Shink leaving sucks
Virtanen and Hutton graduated IMO

The growth from our prospects this year plus Juolevi, stecher and Lockwood
I'd say AT WORST we are where we were last year.

(With virtanen and Hutton in the NHL)

We also lost Corrado, who was #9 last year and would have been similarly ranked this year, I would think. We had Kenins at #8 and he had a very disappointing season. Cassels too went from our #5 to who knows as he struggled in his first pro seaason. And yeah, then there's the lost of last year's #2 and #6.

Boeser and Demko were already highly rated, so no real change there. Gaunce is ranked the same. Subban and especially Tryamkin are the only real risers from last year. The rest of these guys are just still raw and playing in Juniors, so it's hard to really know what to think of them. What it comes down to is that we lost a lot of guys that were ready/almost ready to play in the NHL and didn't really gain anyone new apart from Tryamkin. None of these players are expected to compete for an NHL spot except maybe Gaunce.

Obviously, part of that is due to the sudden emergence of Hutton. who went from #11 to graduated and off the poll, but stuff like that doesn't happen every year.

Corrado would not be considered a prospect anymore.

Yeah our prospect pool seems fairly stagnant despite only 1 prospect graduating who wasn't even seen as one our top prospects. Considering that we were one of the worst teams in the league and added a 5th overall pick it is worrying.

I would disagree about the two bolded: sure they were seen as high-level prospects but getting those seasons under their belts is something you just can't write off under "business as usual". Same could be said for Subban if the trajectory is the same this year, which would mean that he would downright dominate the AHL and force himself onto our playing squad later this season or at the latest next season's start.

And like SonicY mentioned, the D prospect depth is totally rejuveniated from a few years back. If only he had kept Forsling.. then again, he did get Pedan through trade as well, so you win some and lose some I guess.

(Hutton: Earlier draft)
(Subban: Earlier draft)

Tryamkin: Benning draft 2014
Pedan: Benning trade 2014

Brisebois: Benning draft 2015
Olson: Benning draft 2015

Nilsson: Benning signing 2016
Stecher: Benning signing 2016
Gudbranson: Benning trade 2016
Juolevi: Benning draft 2016
Candella: Benning draft 2016

.. and sure, I didn't include Mackenze Stewart buuut, Olson is another 7th rounder whose trajectory is much better, so, again you win some you lose some. The effort either way to bolster that D is real consistent.
