Would have preferred more term but I'll take it. Barrie's back in the mix and we don't have to worry about this for a while.

Sorry, Oilers.

I don't know about you guys but I like it very much. Of course we all love the sounds of 6 or 7 years but term is scary for a defenseman. Plus the AAV would be much higher. 3 years of 5.5 as an RFA is a sweet deal for a Colorado. Throw in a UFA year at the same price and it's a freakin steal.

Nice! Wish we got a couple more years but still a good deal.

Way better than a 1-2 year deal.

Still can't figure out why they prefered "to sign Barrie to a 4-5 year deal" like Sakic said publicly but seemed more than willing to go longer than that with EJ. But hey. Four years is decent.

I'd consider 5.5M quite cheap as well. Should leave us some money for a UFA F.

I'd bet Newport came down once they pretty much knew what the award was going to be.

I like it, don't have to worry about going through this again in 1-2 years and its a nice enough contract that can be traded down the line if need be, won't handcuff the Avs at all.

Hopefully if our drafting sorts itself out and we get another high pick in the 1st round plus 2nd (which I feel we might this year) then we can address him and EJ moving on or declining in 4 years' time. The guy who can replace him by that point would be on an ELC or possibly an RFA anyways.

I was expecting a 2 year deal and then for him to be either traded at the end of that or walk a UFA so it feels like getting a bonus year.

We overpaid for a 5th defender.:D

Hopefully, now people can appreciate what he brings and not overstate his flaws.

tbh, I wonder if the numbers came back and they sided more with the Avs (closer to 4 than a 6) and Newport/Barrie were more willing to make a deal.

I'd really like to know what the award was going to be. If they were willing to settle on 5.5M for 4 years, I've got to believe the ruling was significantly less than 5.5M, maybe less than 5M even.

Well, glad that's over. Good we got one UFA year. Not quite the get-out-the-door deal ROR's was. Both sides should be much clearer on Barrie's worth in 3 years.
