it feels like the better question is does he want one if one means he's going to charlotte. if he's amenable to that idea in the short term, he has certainly played well enough to secure it. but the reality for a player in their mid 20's is that they may have 4 or 5 good earning years remaining of their athletic prime and waiting around to get an opportunity is a younger man's game. he's outplayed guys we slotted as first call up by a wide margin, but he's entrenched in some serious depth to climb further. if he's not on the 23, it might make more financial sense for him to continue his career in europe.

I’m somewhat confused as to why he took a pto with us. One of the deepest defences in the league is going to be hard to crack. I can’t see a guy his age leaving Europe to ride the bus in Charlotte. Perhaps he didn’t receive any other offers or he is open to playing in the ahl. Hard to judge without knowing his motives.

Once he gets signed on any NHL team he's contracted in the league, and in a deep roster team he can expect to be traded to a team more in need of a fringe defender due to injuries or such. Sign cheap, play your ass out in AHL to be a good value contract, the ensuing trade is win-win to both Kaj and Canes.

I think just because you do a PTO with a team, it doesn't mean you can't just sign with anyone in the league. He's still a free agent. If any team in the NHL wants to give him a 1 way deal, I'm sure he'll take it. But I don't think anyone's going to make that offer.

Hell I want to say that happened one year. There was a rando 4th line type on tryout with us and he ended up getting signed by I want to say the Rangers or Caps. Whichever of the two we played in the pre-season that year.

A pto definitely doesn’t give you any rights to a player. Some guys do take them just in hopes of getting into a exhibition game or two and catching someone’s eye.

Good dmen are in such high demand so I find it hard to believe he couldn’t get a tryout somewhere with a better chance of securing a spot. I’m definitely not complaining, though, and I hope we offer him a contract.

torey krug?
No I remember Krug well, this was like a decade before Krug. For some reason I want to say it was someone like Forbes but I don't think it was him either as IIRC he spent a lot of the season with Lowell and was a waiver claim by the Caps.

Was Jeff Norton on tryout here at one point? For some reason that's the name that's sticking with me.

We signed Dan Lacouture off of a pto about ten years ago I want to say. He looked pretty good in preseason, brought a lot of energy. Played a handful of games to start the year then just left the team for Europe.

Only other pto’s we had that I can think of off the top of my head are Jason Woolley, Cale Hulse, and Raffi Torres.

Jeff O’Neill was on one one year.

Was Chad on one recently as well? Or am I making that up?

Yeah I definitely remember Lacouture. That was a weird situation. Didn't want to ride the bus in the AHL (can't blame him) and was going to be getting paid more in the KHL where he went, but then comes back the next season to play for the Bruins farm team.

I think it may have been Norton thinking about it. Though it looks like the season it would have been he would have signed with Florida and been traded to Boston. I remember us playing the Bolts frequently in the pre-season, did we ever play the Panthers a good bit?

The immediate issue that I see is: TVR/Faulk/Pesce plus Haydn Fleury. Fluery's played well enough this preseason to actually make an argument he should be the LHD on the 3rd pairing. But that pushes TVR to the press box, something that would be surprising if it were to happen. I think the organization is in a bit of a conundrum here and almost certainly had hoped a trade would have happened by now. Add to the fact that our PP1 unit w/Hamilton and Faulk on the point(s) has looked darn good, and I'm not sure where the front office's collective heads are.

I think it did coincide with being sent to Albany but the guy signed a two-way. Weird situation.

Hit the nail right on the head. The question for Cajkovsky is -- does he want to play in the NHL, or does he want to play in North America?
