Habs wasn't a trade, Rangers wanted to terminate his contract and the Habs wanted to sign him supposedly.

-Ekholm (Nashville not selling)
-Manson (wouldn't waive NTC?)

I read that the Islanders had a deal worked out with Bufalo for Hall (before the Zajac/Palmieri deal) with the return to the Sabres expected to be the same as what the Isles got for Palmieri/Zajac but it was implied/hinted that Hall used his NMC to block it.

It seems that way. Hall said today that NTC led him to Boston. Think Boston was his only choice all along.

I actually think that the return (even with 50% retention) would be lower than what Kulikov got so it's actually even better to let him walk than to turn our defence into swiss cheese for let's say 6th round pick.
