We can't afford two franchise defencemen on the same team in their UFA primes.

Not if we want to have enough money left for forwards.

Way too rich for OEL, even at 7M which as indicated is not reality. 9.5M is.

Chabot, White, Jaros are all stars in a couple of years. we will need that depth then.

Seems like Boucher's quest for a veteran forward for the bottom 6 will be never ending. Kudos to PD for getting the coach what he wants (or at least trying).

Dorion said in the tsn 1200 interview he's not looking for a top6 fwd anymore unless we can get one "really cheap."

Fine with me.

I'm more than happy with:

Claesson - Karlsson
Chabot - Ceci
*Jaros, Harpur, Lajoie, Englund etc. for depth.

Moving forward on the blue-line. That's definitely a good enough d-corps for a contender as far as potential goes. No need to gut forward depth for a blue-liner like OEL right now.

IMO a Top 6 F option at the second-line LW is our remaining hole on the team. Dzingel to me is a terrific third-line player but just does not have the scoring touch to be a legitimate top-6er. The rest of the top-6 and bottom-6 looks very strong.

My guess is they stick with what they have and maybe try White in that role up to the deadline, and then see what's available and where we stand playoffs-wise. Of course, a healthy MacArthur would have been absolutely perfect :(

Exactly as predicted. Thinks he fooled anyone claiming to need to add a forward then replacing one and calling the job done?
We need another top 6 forward.

We need one for cheap.

Which is what he said.

McKenzie had a list of about 12 teams that are looking for a top 6 forward right now.

We outbid those teams and all of a sudden everyone is screaming at Dorion for gutting the cupboard.

Do we really?

Brassard, Duchene, Hoffman, Ryan and Stone are all guys who are easy top 6 players, heck, they're all 1st line or close to it level players.

That leaves 1 spot to fill with Smith, Dzingel, White as options for the 6th spot. Smith is pacing at 41 pts per 82 and Dzingel at 31 pts. White looks like a potential option down the road.

I mean, it would be nice to upgrade that 6th spot, but that's hardly an area of need. How many teams actually have 6 forwards pacing at ~40+ pts?

I really think our "hole" in the top 6 is more of a mirage caused by Boucher playing Hoffman on the 3rd line. By moving him down there, we appear to need both Smith and Dzingel in the top 6, which isn't really an accurate portrayal of our forward depth.

I'd love to upgrade on our 6th forward spot, but imo it's a luxury, not a need. Right now the bigger need is to fill out the bottom 6 with a guy that has, or will have, Boucher's trust. imo, the ideal scenario is to bump Smith into that role by White proving to be a legit top 6 threat at the NHL level.

Exactly.

The price for forwards sucks right now because they're more in demand than blueliners. The Sens could move Wideman but Columbus and Vegas also have blueliners they're looking to move for forward help.

I think he's talking about managing the cap.

OEL would be amazing, but the realities of the cap-era means that fitting OEL and Karlsson's inevitably high cap hits into our lineup means that we'd be sacrificing elsewhere, and maybe it would be wiser to invest in a defenceman who won't eat up the chunk of cap space that an OEL extension would inevitably cost us, considering how much Karlsson will be asking for on his next contract.

I mean, not to put words in his mouth or anything, but if that's his argument, it has merits.

People want a top 6 forward, but they don't want to give up anything good. That's not compatible.

The names brought up in this thread like Neal, and Kane, those players are getting packages centred around a 1st round pick or an equivalent prospect before the deadline.

I'd expect us to make a deal for a top 9 forward to bolster out depth. Maybe a hockey trade with Wideman or one of our D going the other way. We have the D depth to pull it off.

My hope is that with White and Chabot, by mid season we'll get the Ottawa special of "Well we don't have to add at the trade deadline because adding White and Chabot to the roster at this time with how they are playing is like a trade deadline addition!". I'm not confident Boucher will play them though.

Behind you, look out
"moving forward" "Soon the line up will be" "Once prospect x is ready"

When do we get to stop waiting on prospects to step in and actually go for it?

I believe it is this year or next, I can see White and Chabot playing a half year in Belleville then being brought up for the run. Ideally Brown next year but I think he needs time with the B-Sens

I think we'll trade most of our picks again like last year but not the prospects knocking on the door for when we have to let UFA's walk due to contract issues 2 years from now. We would have 7 free agents to re-sign or move or let walk for free during 1919/1920

Jokinen could of been a good pick up and for cheap it looks like, not sure if he's a top 6 anymore but he's a SO specialist and well, the Sens seem to like the shootout.

Some-one mentioned Blake Comeau earlier that could potentially be a good cheap deadline pickup, Vrbata perhaps is another.

This got me to thinking; what if a team signed a player to an extension and then immediately traded them and retained some salary. Be an interesting way to manage salaries and cap.

Jokinen would not have been a good pickup. Way too slow in general and probably too slow for Boucher's system. He is done.
