Dean going the other way, it's okay I guess. Never been big on him and he hasn't really done anything post-draft to impress.

I guess, but Barbashev is like a career 35 point forward with okay but not very good advanced stats who has never performed amazing in the postseason, and is a rental.

A first rounder from as recent as the draft before last who was on Canada's gold medal World Juniors team, hasn't left juniors yet and hasn't gotten a shot at the AHL should maybe bring back something bigger.

And I say that as someone who was good with a Barbashev trade before it happened and still is okay with the acquisition itself.

Dean's being outproduced in the Q by undrafted players, 5th rounders and 7th rounders, and his showing at the WJCs wasn't great.

I agree his ceiling looks like it will be as a responsible bottom six C/W but with the pedigree he had I'm just saying we probably could have leveraged that into a bit of a higher impact acquisition.

Good pickup in my opinion. He checks a lot of boxes: versatile, an above average skater, and becomes our 2nd most physical top 9 forward (after Cotter) assuming Carrier moves back to the fourth line.

His tendency is to pass but he very capable of shooting without dusting the puck off and is actually incredibly efficient. He may even get a shot on the bummer powerplay position. Overall I think this moves checks a lot of boxes.

To be fair advanced stats (especially the models) aren’t kind to pass first players. And he is quite pass first.

Barbashev’s shooting ability, physically, and skating ability are a very rare combination. I acknowledge that shooting percentages are not completely linear with respect to shot attempts but to put it in perspective:

The other physical players listed would be a detriment to our transition game. Barbashev seems like a really good fit to me. McCrimmon may have killed multiple birds with one stone. I really don’t see how this is a bad trade.

Probably, but his value should only be degrading as time goes on, looks like they tried to include him in a package for Meier but SJ were not having it. If the Meier stuff happened a week ago could've maybe gotten Nino for him. But there's not much left in the market now.

Anyway, Vegas have great pro scouts so Barbie has that going for him.

Not sure how I feel about this. I feel mostly positive about the player the team is getting, but it almost feels like the team hates its first round draft picks.

Really? Two 1sts, four players?
They got two firsts, Mukhamadullin, & Zetterlund for him.

Johnsson's a cap dump(playing in the AHL no less) that they paid SJ to take on, the final prospect is the payment for that.

Edit: didn't even get two 1st. got a 1st, and a 2nd which could turn into a 1st if they reach the ECFs in the next two playoffs. And sent over a 5th while getting a 7th back. The deal is getting worse all the time!

I agree that those are the main pieces. The return is equivalent to 2.5 mid 1sts imo. Just seems too steep for a player with little contract certainty.
