Not a Leafs fan but have been watching a lot of the games from the North division. With a couple of moves to tighten up their team defense and depth, I think the Leafs would be primed for a solid run.

TO VAN
($3,049,125) :
Pierre Engvall
Alexander Barabanov
Travis Dermott

TO TOR ($3,550,000) :
Jake Virtanen
Jordie Benn @50%

WHY? TOR - Benn gives the leafs a veteran defensive presence for the 3rd pair and PK, Virtanen is a bit of a risk but is somewhat cost controlled with decent upside. He gets a fresh start and in a situation where he needs to bring energy and physical play from the 3rd line. Best case scenario he finds himself a Hyman-like role. VAN - Dermott is the most interesting piece here. Same age as Virtanen, hopefully can fill up the 2nd or 3rd LHD slot long term with Juolevi. Engvall can replace Virtanen with slightly less potential and Barabanov might re-sign and try his luck next year (Tryamkin factors?).
---------------------------------

TO NSH
($3,500,000 *or 4,400,000*) :
Alex Kerfoot
2021 2nd Round Pick
Semyon Der -Arguchinsev
*if necessary for cap reasons* Jimmy Vesey + Filip Kral

TO TOR ($2,857,143) :
Colton Sissons
2021 4th Round Pick (Colorado)

WHY? TOR - For the leafs its simple, Sissons is a great shutdown centre and PK and 5v5 defines need fixing. Signed long term for a reasonable cap hit if he can be a long term defensive 3rd line C. NSH - Nashville needs to retool and almost everyone is available. Kerfoot is still 26, signed long term at an ok cap hit and will give Nashville some stability at C or LW during this transition period. Since Sissons is probably worth more than Kerfoots, Nashville gets the pick upgrade and a skilled forward prospect in SDA.

LEAFS ROSTER
Zach Hyman - Auston Matthews - Mitch Marner
William Nylander - John Tavares - Wayne Simmonds
Ilya Mikheyev - Colton Sissons - Jake Virtanen (defensive matchup line, heavy PK minutes)
Nick Robertson - Joe Thornton - Jason Spezza (limited 5v5, PP time)
extras/taxi
: Alex Galchenyuk, Travis Boyd, Nic Petan, Adam Brooks and Scott Sabourin

Morgan Rielly - TJ Brodie
Jake Muzzin - Justin Holl
Mikko Lehtonen - Jordie Benn (limited 5v5, special team time)
extras/taxi : Zach Bogosian, Rasmus Sandin, Timothy Liljegren and Calle Rosen

Frederik Andersen
Jack Campbell
extra : Michael Hutchinson

Leafs are giving the better pieces in every deal. They realistically pass on all deals.

Leafs are looking for a top 6 leftwinger, and maybe someone for the third line a winger or center depends on how things shake out.

Dermott, Engvall and Barabanov don't interest Vancouver at all. Our roster is pretty full, and we're giving up full timers for players that won't improve our team at all. Someone said that Toronto was giving up the best pieces in these two deals, so I say keep them with the Vancouver trade. If you're love struck with Benn and Virtanen though, give us something we don't already have several copies of (LHD for our bottom pairing and a 4th liner at best).

I think Dermott is pretty easily the best player in that deal, and I’m not even that high on Dermott. And the way Bogosian is playing I definitely don’t take him out for Benn.

Vancouver trade is terrible for the Leafs. We’ve got a third pairing PK specialist in Bogosian already, and Dermott is already a better player than Benn. Engvall is cheaper than Virtanen.

I think the players the Leafs should be targetting out of Nashville are Granlund, Arvidsson, Ekholm. Sissions isn't a bad option either if those aforementioned three fall through.

Tanner Pearson is your man, Canucks can retain 50% for the right value back.

Both deals are bad for us. I like Virtanen but he is having a really bad season. I would rather have Engvall+Dermott.

Also am i missing something? why are we adding to Kerfoot for Sissons. i think Kerfoot is easily the better player there.

Yeah I read that I was like wtf isn't that the role Bogo has been filling well? And if he did research, he would also see our PK hasn't been a skater issue but a goalie issue. Andersen one of the worst goalies on the PK in the NHL so far this season for whatever reason in sv%. Our xGA are far lower than what we have given up.

And 5v5 play well, that's just people who don't watch teams often drawing conclusions based of a small sample size. That was our 5th game in 8 days. Habs were off a full week rested and had their legs far more than we did. Not like the Leafs live off the PP like I've seen suggested many times. Matthews has most of his points 5v5 this year for example.

Leafs need a scoring upgrade at LW or RW (but prefer LW but can move over Willy if needed). Outside of that, they are pretty deep team and just need to trust their stars to win.
