A waiver claim on Spezza is 3 grand. No team is sweating that. That would seem like a waste of money (waiver claims cost $$) and good will. Would a GM want to do that?

The NHL is a business, if they think he could help, they would claim him. Obviously, they dont. It's nothing to do with sabotage or pandemic.
what does that even mean? So teams should be guilt tripped into not picking a guy up then? I would take Spezza, he’s better than what we’ve got going on and a 6th of the price.
Not only that but you’d probably put Spezza on unconditional waivers to terminate his contract since he isn’t going to report and then the Leafs just reclaim him.Claiming a player that doesn't want to play there and forcing him to retire is one way to ensure you never have any players sign with you
He’s already cleared.I would love to see a team call his bluff.....

He's not going to play for your team. It's a waste of time, that's why. You'd just be destroying your own reputation as a GM for what putpose?
I can't speak for other teams in our division but Vancouver would take Speeza easily. Our "depth" is terrible. He'd certainly be of more use than Beagle, Eriksson or Sutter.
How is claiming a player off of waivers destroying your reputation? Regardless, it’s over now. It doesn’t matter. Still a slimy move by Toronto. Nobody should be able to pass guys through waivers that are unclaimable.
In a bottom six role I would easily take Beagle or Sutter over Spezza, and by a fair margin.
Are you factoring in the cap savings in this decision, because based on what you get on the ice, it's no question Beagle or Sutter help your club in the bottom six more than Spezza would.
LOL. It's like people haven't watched Spezza in years. He's much more effective than those guys.
You'd be very wrong. Spezza is an excellent cheap 4th liner, he just wants to play, in Toronto. In a bottom six role I would easily take Beagle or Sutter over Spezza, and by a fair margin.

What do you think this is proving?
Are you suggesting that Jason Spezza is a good defensive player?
Out of curiosity, if Jason Spezza is a solid defensive centre - and a bargain at $700K - why did the Maple Leafs just waive him?
Furthermore, why did nobody claim him? Because his agent said he wants to retire a Leaf?
Why exagerate ?*not including the brief 400 games he played for Dallas
As written numerous times, they could simply suspend him...Meh doesnt really matter. If hes really not gonna report to the team, the team would have to put him on waivers again to terminate his contract, if thats the case no team will claim him and Leafs can just reclaim him.
It seems the exact opposite has happened in this thread. As soon as he went unclaimed Ferris showed up. Consider me shocked!
They waived him because they needed cap maneuvering and they knew nobody would claim him. He will be playing with the team again before too long.
Spezza has been highly responsible in his own end and his production (35ish point pace last season) given his limited icetime is fantastic value for a league minimum deal.
???Im surprised at how many opposing fanbases want Jason Spezza lmao.
