The thing is everyone says every year Dubas won't be able to re-sign someone and he magically does. A lot of this opinion is out the window. Let's wait another 20 games before the wahmbulance revs up.

And every year people say that, Dubas goes dumpster diving to replace the players he cant re sign, you sure your a leafs fan?

It's not a bad number in a vacuum, but I don't like it for the Leafs for two reasons.

1. Timing. This basically guarantees that they have to move Nylander or Marner because they won't (and shouldn't) move Matthews and can't move Tavares.
It's very possible that with another unsuccessful playoffs, they would have done so anyway. But they have lost any leverage because other GMs will know they absolutely have to deal one of them. Both good players, who will potentially be sold for pennies on the dollar.

2. It's more of the same. Currently they have more than half of their cap tied up in 5 players who more or less all contribute to the same part of the game. It's pure offense. Matthews is becoming slightly more two-way, and Marner can kill penalties. But essentially, it's 5 players who are paid exhorbitant amounts for their offense. It leaves little money for high level defensive players, grinding players, or goaltending.
Rielly's not off the hook either. If the Leafs have a terrible season Rielly could be moved before the NTC kicks in. A crappy move and not likely but it has been done before.

no he can’t. His NMC was extended to now. It’s something that can happen Apparently.

Very fair deal for the Leafs. So the full NMC is for the entire 8 year extension (9 counting this season) and not for 6 years like I've been reading here? Seems the 10 team NTC is included within the full NMC so Rielly would still likely have a say in if he wants to move in the last couple seasons also it seems.

What was Riellys point totals before Matthews and Marner arrived? Or are you just ignoring that part and only McDavid makes the players around him better?
To be honest with neither player on my team. It looks like Rielly has the edge.

That's my thought anyways.

People also say they aren’t gonna win crap being so top heavy, and magically they’re been right the entire time and frankly it hasn’t even been close.

I think they could have kept the contract sealed for later to give Dubas more negotiating power to trade away some players to make cap space next year, like Kerfoot.

Now if Dubas tries to dump Kerfoot, other GMs will ask for more, because the Leafs are in a worse position again.
The value of eliminating the uncertainty and distraction this season with a pending UFA is greater than whatever minimal hypothetical leverage they could get in a future trade.

He's still very questionable in his own zone and has a tendency to play like he's a winger from time to time. This doesn't really address the Leafs issues, more-so a "we're glad that you've been with us for so long" contract, but the Leafs not addressing their issues is pretty common-place nowadays.

Has he earned the contract? Sure thing.

Have the Leafs screwed themselves even more? You bet they did. There goes Muzzin and Kerfoot and whatever is left of the guys that actually seem to care.

Good luck to Toronto by working with almost nothing to secure more "depth", if you can even call it that at this point.

One does need to accept that if they were going to keep Rielly, it's not like there was a way to spend any less than $7.5m.

The question is / was, were the Leafs better off saying goodbye to Mo at 28 years old, and having a 33-year old Jake Muzzin be this team's #1 defenceman; plus a bunch of cap space?

No, signing Morgan Rielly was not going to address any "issues" with the team. Generally speaking, re-signing players don't address issues, they aim to prevent future ones.

You can question, whether with Dermott & Sandin in the picture, losing Rielly was going to be an issue that his $7.5m cap hit couldn't resolve.... but in the same breath... it can't all be quantity over quality. If the Leafs are trading Marner or Muzzin, then they'll regret not keeping Rielly.

Wonder if we see any movement with Lindholm negotiations after this? I'd be happy with the same deal.
