There is nothing wrong with this deal. Its a slight bump and he is worth it. He brings it every shift. Doesn't choke like the so called core 4.
As a non-Leafs fan your point makes a lot of sense if he fills that role for Toronto. Some fans struggle to separate the non-scoring elements of the game from the scoring elements and struggle to separate RFA signings from those that encompass UFA years. For a good third line center who can "win" run of play matchups against top six centers this is a great signing. I think one of the problems Toronto has had in recent years is pressure to placate fans who have lost sight of how a team wins versus just adding talent and name players who may not mesh. It’s insane lol. The guys been dynamite for us. 15+ mins a game of shut down hockey, PK time. Brings it every game.
Would you rather Kerfoot? Bunting? Holl?
Kampf has earned this money, and we get him for his best 4 years likely.
Reminds me a little bit of Teddy Blueger in Pittsburgh. Really good 4C who was quite the bargain when his contract was reasonable, but became a bit of an issue when suddenly he's making over $2 million per year for good defense/PK but little offense.I like Kampf, but it's an overpay. He's a very good 4C, but still a 4C, doesn't have the offensive talent to be a legit 3C. $2.4 mil is just too much for a 4C, especially on a highly cap constrained team like ours, and especially committing to 4 years.
Would have rather we let him walk on anything above $1.8 mil, or at least anything above $2 mil. I'm sure some will say "$400-600K is nothing", but that simply isn't true for the Leafs, we're so tight against the cap and need to get value out of every contract. Holmgren gave us perfectly decent 4C minutes last year, when we had injuries, and he's only $800K, it's not like walking away from Kampf would've been a big loss.
Not an impressive first move by Boston Pizza Jr.
That's what the Leafs already do.Bit of an overpay, but I like Kampf.
3% of the cap really isnt much for a player with high defensive impact.
Toronto should just feed him dungeon d-zone starts, let him flip the ice and then let the big boys on in the ozone against weaker or tired competition.
Basically the way PIT used Cullen and CHI used Kruger.
That's just Spezza, he's always chuckling.Somebody in Pittsburgh is having a chuckle
Yeah, I do think Kampf is a bit better than Blueger, but similar situation/problem. If you have expensive star players, you still need to surround them with good complementary 1st-3rd line forwards and 1st/2nd pair dmen, and you can’t afford that if you’re paying too much for your 4th line and 3rd pair dmen.Reminds me a little bit of Teddy Blueger in Pittsburgh. Really good 4C who was quite the bargain when his contract was reasonable, but became a bit of an issue when suddenly he's making over $2 million per year for good defense/PK but little offense.
Loved Blueger at a $750k cap hit, but not so much at his most recent $2.2 million cap hit.
He is a defensive player, very good in his own end. Good penalty killer. In 2 years the cap will have gone up 7 million and who knows after that. His cap hit will be a mere spec on our roster. Think long term. We have a hard nosed player signed for 4 years and after 2 the hit will be minor and easy to move if we want.2.4 would be ok if it was a two year deal. 4 year deals for a forward who scored more than 10 goals once is not good.
My God, he just hot hired. Let him get a year or so in before you guys start bashing him. It's fans like you that give this fanbase a bad reputation. The guy who negotiated the Huberdeau extension strikes again.
Yeah - he's just getting started alright. My God, he just hot hired. Let him get a year or so in before you guys start bashing him. It's fans like you that give this fanbase a bad reputation.
This is where I'm at too. As an Oiler fan we pay a lot of `below average 25 point type guys around 3 million (Yamamoto, Kassian, Foegele) and none of them can defend or take faceoffs like Kampf. They don't score much more than him either. That said, $2.4 for a 10-goal, 25-point forward is about right anyway.
