I would probably rather do LW/RW first for the simple reason that Alex Ovechkin seems to be past his prime, so he'll be easier to rate than Crosby/Malkin, both of whom are at very volatile points in their careers due to injuries.

I would prefer to do it this way as well, especially with the Center list being so deep and potentially varied on individual lists.

Are we judging players just on their time as LW/RW/C or as a forward as a whole? Guys like Zetterberg switched around. I'm sure a lot of historical examples as well.

I think the only fair way to do it is to pick a primary position for a player and then judge his whole career on that. Otherwise, guys who were versatile enough to excel at multiple positions, a quality that should be commended, will be punished for it instead.

Any way we do it, there will be drawbacks. My personal inclination is to put all forwards together and not have to enter the morass of determining which players belong to which positions.

Actually the idea of ranking multiple position skaters is intriguing.

It would be very hard to do, for instance some guys went on a natural switch from defense to center like Kelly who has already been ranked as a center, then others play multiple positions within the same seasons for less or more periods of time, often based not only on skill but team makeup and composition.
