The only team to beat the Penguins in Pittsburgh since Christmas is the Hurricanes. Shocking they lost this game. Shocking.

It's not shocking at all, of course. Except they needed to win. And the reason they needed to win is because of all the other games they coulda shoulda won but lost instead.

Now they're last in the division by 3 full points, and their games in hand are basically gone.

Can they go on a ten win streak to get back in it? Because that's what it's going to take. I suppose it's possible, but here we are again, exactly where we've been for a decade.

At least we've got a new owner. Yay.

The season ended when Aho got hurt. I thought we all accepted that?

I'm still holding out hope that this upcoming stretch will be better. It's a bunch of home games against teams that haven't shown themselves to be great this season.

The Canes couldn't ask for a better opportunity to go on a win streak.

But they've actually got to take advantage of said opportunity, which they've shown to be just godawful at.

It's difficult to accept that we have a team where 1 guy goes down and thats it, when the Bruins are where they are after having like the entire team injured for a significant stretch and the Knights just cobble together a bunch of randoms and are off to the races.

It's a sign the team isn't structured well. Injuries are part of the game. We were also out of the WC spot before Aho went down.

**** this team. Nothing is changing. I am getting sick of excuse that we are doing all the right things. Just pay up for someone who can actually score and pay up for someone who can actually be #1 goalie. At this point I don`t care how much it costs. How long this rebuild will go on?

This is the rebuild that never ends
It goes on and on my friends
Some gm started rebuilding not knowing what it was
It goes on and on and on and....

This is the rebuild that never ends....

Someone we played in the last week was supposed to and had a 10 game ppg drought or something crazy but scored 2 on us in 3 tries.....so I'll say...no

Caught in the midst of a slump? Desperately seeking that first nhl goal? Power play in a bit of a drought?

Play the Carolina hurricanes, it’ll cure what ails you.

Because they were already in trouble before he got hurt. They already needed to play above their heads to leapfrog 3 teams before the injury. That was just the last blow.

RF said when he came on it was a 5 year plan that was going to consist of building through the draft, and this is year 4. Still, this is the first season that the team, from RF on down gave the impression that they had the team to make the playoffs so it's understandingly frustrating (I'm just as frustrated) that it won't be the case again. His outlook was based on:
  • Expected improvement from young guys (which we are getting from TT and Aho).
  • Bring in Williams to help score more goals (which we aren't getting)
  • Improved Goaltending with Darling (which we aren't getting)
  • Shoring up the 3rd pairing (which we are getting, but offset by the fall-off of the 2nd pairing / Faulk)
  • Improved 4th line with Kruger (which we aren't getting).
The basic problems that plagued this team still exist. Weak down the middle (no 1C) and poor goaltending. As most teams have found out in the past, those (particularly a 1C) are two the most difficult things to solve, particularly when you are a low budget team who isn't getting a #1 or #2 OA draft choice.

I'm still not convinced Bill Peters is the right coach, but I am convinced that this team still is lacking in talent and until either they open the checkbook or some of the guys drafted (Necas?) start to contribute, it will be the case.

TDL is the wrong time to sell off a guy who’s got another year on his contract. Especially if you want roster players in return. Those trades are meant for getting draft assets and prospects in return for guys who are going to leave as FAs over the summer.

At this point I’m interested to see what we could get for Skinner and Faulk, but that needs to happen in the offseason. We damned well better not be trading those guys for anything other than established top-line roster players.
