I think if Curtis were to sign a 'non future ELC' the first year would kick in immediately and a year would be burned for the '21-'22 season. This is just a quick way of saying he's finishing the year on his current deal and this kicks in for '22-'23.

Ah good read. Didn’t think of that

Are they saying they will sign him in the 'future'?

All this means is that it starts next year. He plays out the rest of this year on his AHL deal, which means we still have the contract spots open to use on other guys in the mean time.

Makes sense. There was no rush to sign him to an ELC for this year when he would not factor in to the Leafs plans, and we needed those contract spots for other guys. At the same time, Douglas was probably ready for an ELC at some point either in the offseason or early next year.

Does this mean he has an NHL deal and could be called up to the Leafs on a tryout at some point here? Or that he'll play out his AHL deal and then he has a new deal starting next season?
I like the prospect. We don't have many large bodies that play tough in the organization. Ability to play C or start sometime on W wing the big club is nice too

Future means next season. So July 1st 2022 his NHL deal starts. At least Im pretty sure thats what it means.

This means it doesn't count towards this years 50 contracts (Leafs are at 47, soon to be 49 with Knies and Abuzzese)

Means he can’t be called up for this year.

A future two year? Is that normal in the language to say future?
Future meaning it kicks in next year, and due to his age his ELC eligibility is for 2 seasons. If doesn’t impact this seasons contract limit, and he can’t come in a game and burn a year this season.
