There are many more ways to show you are trying than simply 'crashing and whacking' the opposition goalie...
You realize Columbus didn’t have to do anything to take a penalty against us because they knew we would do nothing.
It works both ways. You don’t think Crosby/Malkin are dirty?

Then people ask why the Leafs don’t draw penalties. Just watch Matthews and Tavares, give the Leafs a few bumps when they get out of line and call it a series. Weak sauce. You have to get dirty in the playoffs. Did the Spezza fight cause us 50 minutes in penalties?

There is a big difference between Spezza fighting to try and get a reaction from the team and someone crashing into the goalie to what, get in the oppositions head? Korpisalo has been playing his whole life, having one of our core players crash into him would not change anything in that series. Would not faze him in the slightest imo.

Yeah we didn't need to crash into their goalie, we needed to score.

You know how you see goals scored where the guys on TV say "wow, the goalie had no chance whatsoever on that one"? For all the money we're paying our forwards, we should have had some of those. It can be an amazing sequence of passes followed by a great shot, it can be screening the goalie, it can be positioning yourself in front of the net for a tip in or to bang in a rebound and we just didn't get it done.

Leafs didn't lost to columbus because any kind of attitude, mindset of whatever you want. Toronto lost because his defence are awful.

Did you see rielly or any def joining leafs attack or trying to do something offensivly until leafs trailing late in the third? No they didn't because they can't with partner caliber of ceci or barrie or Holl(against top line). So every dman stay close to the blueline, taking absolutly no risk and just dump the puck behind the net every time they touch the puck. That's was a huge problem

So if you playing 3 vs 5 all game long because your playing with only 2 top 4 dman (with one injured) and a bunch of 5-6-7-8th dman, it is normal than leafs fowards didn't look pretty good?

They lost because the coach had the D in deep the entire time, loaded up one line making the other three lines meh and took away any and all depth playing Nylander where he shouldnt be playing with and throw in a splash of injury

Crashing the net in the playoffs to get a mental edge on a goalie is a minimum requirement. It's not so much you're necessarily going to rattle a guy all the time as much as you're proving to yourself you're doing everything possible to compete and try to score those goals and make your presence known to the opposition. There's a mental component to all those greasy little after the whistle scrums, finishing checks hard, creating havoc that indicates you are doing everything in your power to try and win. This is just playoff culture, and if you're making excuses why it's not necessary, not effective or whatever just means you don't understand and you're not ready to win.

I would just take any type of goals from them as long as they actually scored

I’m not talking about crashing into the goalie in the sense of run him/hurt him, I’m talking about getting into the crease after a shot, no whistle yet because the play isn’t dead and don’t assume the play is over. You have to get in the face of the guy so he has to track puck + players. It’s down low play.

It’s easier to pretend it’s the goalie and Marincin.

Marner admitting he was not engaged for game 1 pretty much tells us all we need to know. JT and Nylander would probably admit the same thing off the record. This team has a bunch of players who are not willing to play outside their comfort zone game in and game out.

So you want the core players, to go in on pucks that are about to get whistled dead? So basically you want Mo, Marner, and Nylander to get jumped?

You don’t want any 2nd effort?
Just one, gosh gee whiz didn’t go in?

wouldn’t getting jumped lead to all those penalties you spoke of?
And our PP is our toughness?

2 GPG for (abysmal offense) vs. 2.4 GAA (very decent defense). The defense and goalie showed up. The offense (minus Matthews) didn't.

What happens if Marner goes and takes 3 whacks on Korpisalo after the whistle?

What's supposed to happen is Korpisalo hits Marner with a blocker, Jones bear hugs Marner, Leafs players jump into a big scrum. There may or may not be offsetting penalties or a penalty drawn to CBJ. Face off reset, Hyman parks his butt at the top of the crease, Korpisalo fights of position, jostles with Hyman for space, whacking at him with the stick, doesn't see the puck cleanly on the next shot attempt. Leafs manufacture either a re-direct tip or a sloppy rebound with a couple of guys parked in the slot. Rinse and repeat.

Wasn't the captain supposed to be an offensive threat? I wonder if all those shots he took into the wall in front of Columbus' net counts a shots on goal.

I like this approach. It could work if the guy with the "C" leads the way.
