Had a fly fishing outing planned with my best bud for a month now. Yesterday it rained about 8 hours straight all morning and I was worried it would muddy up the water too much to go so I told him to wait and see. Last night I went to the park nearby to look at the water and it was stained, but not muddy nor much higher, maybe 2" up from normal so we green lighted the excursion. He lives an hour and a half away from me and rather than have him drive yet again all the way here to fish the river I know, I say let's meet at a new river half way between us at a Army Core of Engineer's spot on the river where it dumps into a nice sized lake and walk upstream.
Pick the spot on the map, email it to him with google map directions and we both set off this morning. I "arrive at my destination" after clicking the link I sent him and opening in google maps only to discover my destination was a good half hour away and in the middle of a town. WTF. Next we make it to our meet up only to find out the entry point into the river is about a 15 foot hole that is impossible to wade and moreover the river itself is about 15-25 feet wide with dense trees on both sides. Impossible to fly fish (for us anyways - we don't roll cast like the pros). So we decide maybe the lake would be ok and just fish off the campground bank - not ideal but hey in a pinch let's make it work. Go to the lake, find the shore and wind is a good constant 20-25 mph strong, enough to make little white caps on the lake and blowing directly into our faces.
Ok, let's find another river. But then I remember driving over the next nearest river on the way and it was muddy as the mississippi. So he ends up driving all the way back to my river I checked last night only to find out it has also turned into a muddy stew. We still put in and get him some practice time but we waded a section I've never been in and I quickly realize how bad of an idea that was after nearly stepping into 2 holes over my waders and then 2 submerged fallen trees and a huge boulder. To make it worse, he fished probably 30 minutes and I kept looking back to see him not casting but fiddling with his line. Finally I walk back up to him to see what's going on and he realizes he has missed an eyelit with his line and it kept wrapping around the pole.
It was not our day.
an hour later we call it quits and decide a late lunch is probably the best idea of the day.
F U rain! FU GPS! Why you ruin our plans? It was still better than a day at work though.
