In just a years time alot of things can change. Last season we saw HFNHL action Tampa Bay was one of the worst teams in the league and they ended up with the 3rd overall pick. Just like expected Tampa did trade that pick and they have also traded the first round pick in 2006 but that doesnt seem to matter anymore. Believe it or not, but it looks like the franchise from Tampa will make it to the playoffs this year.

GM Martin Sedin said that he is very happy with the way the team has been playing so far this season. After eight games the team has won four games and tied once and lost three games. The team has however lost the two last games, the lost against Panthers is nothing to write home about but who could believe that Tampa of 05/06 would loose against Toronto? Toronto was early up with 4-0 and even though Tampa won the shoots they couldnt get closer then 4-1 after that Mikael Samuelsson had scored his first of the season.

Empty arena in Tampa?

The biggest dissapointment in Florida is that the crowd is nowhere to be found. After the first home games the crows average is only 12722 and that in the Ice Palace who can almost seat 20.000 people. GM Sedin said that he is extremly dissapointed and dont understand how the fans in Tampa thinks. We did bring in high quality players such as Brett Hull, Pavel Bure, Michael Nylander and the legend Mario Lemieux, but still no crowd? Common! We need you to be able to qualify for the playoffs.

Tugnutt really the right goalie?

Is Ron Tugnutt really the quality in goal Tamap needs to make it to the playoffs? Before the season the answer was no from the media and after eight games the answer still seems to be no. Yes, Ron has won four games but his gaa is was up with 3,63 and his savings is alot below 0,900. The Austrian born Divis isnt the answer either so believe it or not but the goalie situation still seems to be the biggest problem in Tampa.

Whos hot and whos not?

Back in 99 Daniel Sedin was the first player ever drafted in the HFNHL draft. Ever since that moment he has belonged to the team who drafted him and finally he has started to produce as a first overall pick. So far this season 2 goals and 9 assist for 11 points, during his earlier days Daniel was more of a scorer. Other hot players are legend Mario Lemieux who has 9 points in his first 8 games with the team, he has however only one goal so far. Nylander, Bure and Hull are also producing as expected, around one point per game. What is more intresting is the production of Havelid and Gratton. Havelid is the leading defenceman with seven points and Gratton has five points, Gratton is just the third center on the team.

The two biggest disappointments of the team so far is Derek Armstrong and Mikael Samuelsson who just have one point in common. We need however to understand that they are both playing in the 4th line with just a few minutes of ice time each game. As long as Gratton are producing I doubt that Armstrongs icetime will increase and then a trade might be the only option for him to get icetime. If we are speaking of Samuelsson who scored his first last night, his icetime will improve and rumours mention that GM Sedin will put Samuelsson on the third line instead of goon Tie Domi.

In the next couple of games we will be able to tell if Tampa has a team that could make it to the playoffs. The only thing we know so far is that they have started the season much better then last year and one of the questions that remains unanswered is how many points they will improve their overall standings.

This is Nitram Nides for Tampa Herald.
