Sources: Pitcher skips MLB draft for Japan deal

Nineteen-year-old pitcher Carter Stewart is in agreement with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of the Japanese Pacific League on a six-year contract worth more than $7 million, a groundbreaking deal that could have long-term ramifications for Major League Baseball's amateur and professional sides, sources told ESPN.

Stewart, who was chosen by the Atlanta Braves with the eighth pick in the 2018 draft out of a Florida high school but did not sign after they reduced their signing-bonus offer due to an alleged injury, was expected to be chosen in the early second round of this June's draft. By signing with Fukuoka, which has won four of the past five Japan Series, Stewart would guarantee himself significantly more money than he would have made with a major league organization -- and could theoretically join the major leagues as a 25-year-old free agent.

4 more years after this one. 24 M per year. Mariners eating a part:
  • acquired by NY Mets in trade from Seattle 12/3/18, with Mariners paying Mets $20M as part of the deal ($5M in Dec. 2018 and $3.75M each Dec. 1, 2019-22)

Cano still has good underlying numbers in terms of average exit velocity, expecting BA, hard hit% so he should get better results moving forward.

Also Mets got perhaps the best closer in the game for 4 years. It's up to those 2 guys to not make the deal a fleece.

Kelenic looks good but he's still in A ball right now, let's not declare him a franchise or all-star player yet.

I wonder if this might become a trend. Pro baseball players make peanuts (relatively speaking) for their first however many years, and almost all of them don't even reach the majors.

Yeah not good that the guy's losing essentially two consecutive seasons. I didn't hear that the surgery will be checking on the Tommy John surgery too - is this type of follow-up routine or could there be other concerns about Honeywell's arm? I was really hoping to see him pitch here in Durham this season.
