Maine selects Vladimir Ruzicka, the 6'3 210 lbs. smooth-skating, exceptional stick-handling captain of the 1998 Olympic gold-medal team who was the Czechoslovakian top player (Golden Hockey Stick) in 1986 and 1988 and who was the Boston Bruins' #1 scoring forward in the 1991-92 season in goals (39) and points (75) as the left winger on the Janney line. He has played on ten international medal-winning teams, a hero of three Olympics, three world championships and one of his two Canada Cups. He has been inducted into the IIHF hall of fame.

O'Connell.

An American who took Sinden's advice and went to Canada to develop and became the #1 player in Ontario juniors. But he was so undersized that NHL teams passed on him early in the draft. He ends up with Sinden's Bruins and contributes offensively on a team with Park and Bourque.

I had him on my list as a pp specialist. I wouldn't put him on a top pairing.

Man, with these shorter ATDs in the past, you’d have a much better idea of the pool of players available. It’s at least a comfort that I’m not the only one occasionally goofing up.

Rick Kehoe will do the trick for my pick, and after that it’s time to get serious with some long term lists.

Two nights ago I had a dream...

I had a dream that I drafted Tom Paton (which I have indeed done) but that I found out later had already been drafted in the ATD.

I swear I checked SEVEN times in the last two days because that dream was so vivid and I am on holidays, on gin, and ain't so sure what's what.

Cornwall selects: C, Viktor Zhluktov
There were three 2nd line centers left on my list and I went with a Czech legend, but I wasn't happy about it. No way would Z have made it past my 4th line pivot role. I remember we talked glowing about him in elementary school in 1981.

Maine selects Lars Bjorn, the third Swedish player inducted into the IIHF HOF (after Tumba and Hedberg; the same time as Salming).

Bjorn is a 6'4 tall 227 lbs. defenseman who not only won the most Swedish league championships ever (9), but more importantly was named best defenseman at the world championships where he medalled four times, including two golds over the Soviets.

One of those victories over the Russians he captained the team (with the largest crowd ever that century attending: 50,000+) and he was requested to sing the national anthem, and ... he forgot the words! He reverted to a popular Swedish drinking song that was quickly adopted by his countrymen! :)

He was a 6-year captain of the national team, 9-year captain of his league team and the second ever player inducted into the Swedish hockey hall of fame, often considered the greatest Swedish defenseman until Lidstrom (Salming being a hot button issue in Stockholm).
