That question at 9:04 from Trev- I wonder what he was trying to get at, exactly. Perhaps that the 'Ole Country Club Holland Loyalty days are over?

That headshake from Stevie is kind of meme worthy.

Thanks for doing this.

So far I see a handful of moves I really like, several items that I'm indifferent on but aren't significant to begin with, and nothing I'm really upset or disappointed by.

Should be a fun off season this summer.

It's a bad situation to inherit, but you can't say Yzerman hasn't made every smart move he can make. No big head scratchers, no big risks, no desperate signings to try to turn this team into a mediocre playoff team (ala Holland), and lots of accumulating assets. Going to be a long rebuild, but at least he's doing it the right way.

Holland had different directives at that point. His last couple of years when allowed to rebuild looks similar in terms of heavy asset acquisition. His last one actually being Stevie's. Curious what Stevie does in year 4 next year... I don't think we plan on being bad beyond the 2022 draft. I get staying bad for the crack at Shane Wright, he is the best player since McDavid, in my opinion he can be better than Crosby. So yeah exceptional talent if we get lottery luck in 2022.

To this point I'd say the Regula-Perlini trade is the clearest loss of perceived value in a swap, it remains to be seen what Regula turns out to be, and with the young D we've got in our cupboard it likely won't matter

I'm not blaming Holland for the keep the streak alive nonsense. But the maturation / development of his picks for about a 7-8 year period, leaves a lot to be desired. Even if he didn't have a ton of 1st round picks to work with, the cupboards were pretty bare.

To me that was a loss immediately because Regula was so young and Perlini was kind of already what he is, not very good. I get he was going for a Fabbri type situation, but at least with that one he gave up another player who was already what he was. Not saying Regula will even make the NHL, but I liked his outlook more than trading him right away.

That said, I definitely understand any GM wanting the team to be his guys and to have his stamp on the team. I think a number of Holland drafted players will find their ways to other teams in the near future. Won't be surprised to see Cholowski, Lindstrom, McIsaac, Larson and some others be traded within not too long. Also wouldn't be absolutely shocked if any of Zadina, Rasmussen or Veleno were traded as well if Yzerman finds guys he likes better.

Thing is though, we were always drafting at the end of every round or near to it, so lots of not having 1sts, 2nd or 3rds and then many times are earliest pick was near the 60 mark, which is really a hard spot to find game changers. Also I always find that the picks in the 20-end of the 1st round, seem to bust more than early-mid 2nd round picks. Sometimes I think teams take the perceived guy that should go in the 1st round rather than taking a player maybe a little lower ranked but who is a better fit, but that is just my thoughts as to why the end of the 1st picks seem to be weaker or perceived weaker at least.

10/28/19 - Traded D Alec Regula to Chicago Blackhawks for W Brendan Perlini

Not seen much discussion on this trade over time. surprised it took place and hard to tell how it turns out for a few years, BUT Perlini was garbage and AR was a point a game D man his last year in the OHL.

Perlini was a 15 a year goal guy before coming to Detroit. A 3rd liner for a 4th round draft pick when we were absolutely hurting for any kind of offense isn't a bad trade. It was a gamble to provide the team with cheap depth.
Regula was likely the ask because he was teammates with Adam Boqvist in the OHL. It's not like Regula looks like a world beater. Probably a 5-6 kind of defenseman or worse.

not sure where you're getting that 4th round thing from

he was an early 3rd round pick(5th guy selected in the 3rd round)

he was more than a year post draft when traded so bit weird to call him an x round pick to begin with at that point but that's just flat out inaccurate

Apologies, I thought Regula was picked in the 4th round, not the 3rd. It's still not a bad asset to trade for a guy that scored 14, 17 and 14 goals before coming to a historically bad Detroit team.

4/10/21 - [pt. 2/2] Traded D David Savard (50% salary ret.) to Tampa Bay Lightning for 2021 4th round pick

Stevie got robbed on this one. Total blunder /s

That's only because you don't understand that it was part of a three team trade and Yzerman certainly did not make a blunder. It was yet another excellent move by Motowns Big Wheel.
