The Hockey News Top 90 Players of the 1990s

Received this in my mailbox today. It was a nice surprise as I don’t believe the project was announced beforehand. THN ranks the Top 90 Players of the 1990s. I originally thought it was the annual Collector’s edition special, but upon further viewing it appears to just be a regular issue.

I can’t post the entire list due to copyright and site rules, but I’ll post the top 15 for discussion purposes.

I can’t post too many thoughts without giving away the majority of the list, but I did want to share as a heads up since I’m sure many on here will want to pick it up on newsstands.

What are your thoughts on the top-15? I thought Belfour at 11 seemed fairly generous at first glance. All in all, the list isn’t awful. I actually find it to be a fairly competent since I typically expect these to piss me off lol A few curious placements, obviously. Yzerman over Sakic raised my eyebrows but then I remembered that Sakic’s Hart and Pearson season was in 2000-2001. Yzerman did have the Conn Smythe and Selke in the late 90’s.

Has anyone else received this yet? If so, what are your thoughts?

Is the list based on play in that decade alone or is it a general ranking of prominent players who were active during the 1990s?

Edit: Since Jagr is ranked first, it must be the former.

It only takes play in the 90s into account.

Gretzky over Lemieux for the decade is surprising. But that would be my top 4.

There wasn't a single day in the 1990s in which Gretzky was as good a player as Lemieux. Even during the 3 years he was retired, Lemieux could've come back in a day's notice and been the better player.

The Hockey News is so irrelevant in the hockey world today. Their writers are terrible; I don't think they can afford to hire anybody of any quality. It has never been the same since Bob McKenzie left, really, and that's a very long time ago.

Yeah people tend to forget that Gretzky was past his peak but he was still Gretzky up until he got Sutered.

I would have Lemieux above him for the decade but I can see how one could make the argument with all the missed time by Lemieux.

Nothing sticks out as really bad. Lemieux has the highest level of play but he missed so much time, and Hasek has his missed time as well.
