Cory has struggled mightily, both on the ice and with injury the past 2 years and you want to play him 17 out of 20 games for a team battling for a high draft pick? because of a 6 game stretch?
He should play 15 of 20 games, so we can better see what we have in him to assess what we need in goal next year.

We already know what we have in Kinkaid, a guy who is most definitely gone after this year, no matter what.

Playing Cory in 75% of the games to end the season does not prove he can play 75% of the games next season.

You've noted more then anyone how bad Cory has been over the last 3 years, but especially this year. Now after 6 good games you want to pull a complete 180 and playing him like an in his prime star?

He's 33, and has been battling injuries for a long while now. We need to manage his return. And most likely the rest of his career here. Cory playing 75% of the games should not be a focus, nor an expectation.

I'm not sure if you're misunderstanding me here. I absolutely do not think he's pulling a 180. I think he's probably a bad goaltender, on par with the Marty of 2013-2014. That's better than the unserviceable goalie he was to start this year and for the calendar year of 2018, but not good enough to be the starter next year and we're really playing with fire and already punting next season if we expect him to be that.

But we'll need to play him more often than not just to see how serviceable he is going into next year.

I think unless he does a complete 180 and plays at least league average next year, next year is probably his last season here, at the very latest. If he implodes the rest of the season, I think he may not be here after this year. I think his leash is getting pretty short here. There needs to be a pretty good plan in net next year.

There literally isn’t one person calling for or expecting Cory to be the starter next year.

It’s pointless to keep bringing up over and over and over and over and over and over again.

I think that since many here want to harp on Cory again and again and again, perhaps this GDT outlived its usefulness(since no one is talking about the game anymore) and the rest of the Cory talk should go in the Goaltender thread.

In reviewing the goals again, I thought Cory looked a bit shaky on both goals 1 and 3. I wouldn't call them bad or even stoppable, but he looked a bit shaky. He was on his belly on goal 1, so it's hard to really get on him for not stopping the loose puck on that one, but after the puck is put in, he lifts up his glove like he couldn't believe the puck wasn't under it. Goal 3 looked like he tried to freeze it and was covering his glove to the ice, only the puck wasn't actually under it.

Gryba was a bum on both goals 2 and 4. Someone asked Hynes about that play on goal 2 in the press conference and he said ''The goalie has no chance on it'' and calls out the defenseman for not cutting off the pass. I think he even mentioned Gryba by name. So I wouldn't be surprised if he's the healthy scratch on Monday when Carrick comes.

Agostino is a pretty good player for what he is. Probably still a borderline AHL guy, but probably not far off from J.S. Dea or Brian Gibbons. Much better than Gabriel, Rooney, Pietila, Lappin and current Stafford. Even if he's not scoring much, he might not hurt you like those other guys do, but we need to see more. He's the only guy out of that bunch that I'm currently open to seeing again on this team after April 6th.

I don't know how good Mueller is, he's probably just a bottom pairing guy. His ceiling isn't very high at all, but he's very solid or at least he has been this year. Could wind up being a Ben Lovejoy type player. I wish he was the one that was only in year one of a 3 year contract and not Santini, who really is proving to not be any good at all.

Yeah well I'm pretty much expecting Cory to be the starter next year.

I'm either expecting Cory to be the starter or Blackwood/some vet who's not Cory to compete for the job in camp. I really don't see them getting a no-doubt starter from the outside, especially with Blackwood here and Cory already signed.

Ya, not only is Cory looking better, but he still has 3 years on his deal, and as you say finding a legit #1 is not an easy task.

Cory as the starter, finding a dependable Vet, with Blackwood in the AHL is how I figure it plays out.

IfCory has a competent finish to the season it’s hatd to see Shero moving on from him in the offseason. The easy thing to do is get another vet to pair him with and hope he is competent next season. Then they will see what the landscape is post CBA. At least he has all offseason to get in tip top shape since he won’t have rehab to worry about barring further injury.

That's why Cory has to be played a lot - because it's not likely that he's going to be good enough to handle whatever role you think he should have.

We can go into the offseason and make tons of moves to improve at forward and defense but if Cory and Blackwood are the goalies for next year, I’d put a healthy wager on a playoff miss again next year.

If Dustin Penner could injure himself eating pancakes, Cory could reinjure his hip mowing the lawn

Then they LTIR him and it makes the decision easy.

If Cory finishes at least competently I think they bring him back next year because it is the conservative approach the lessens the impact on future years. If he can play 40 games decently next year in a tandem they can see what shakes out after the CBA.

What’s the line for making an assessment as competent?

Smells like a “punt” strategy to me and I don’t like it.

Tandems rarely work out in a positive direction.

I guess competent is a subjective analysis based on management’s assessment of how they think he looks? I don’t disagree with your view but I’m skeptical that Shero is on any sort of horse at with ownership. He apparently sold them on the slow rebuild based on interviews he’s given and I don’t see this season as changing that. The easy and patient thing to do if he can hold it together the rest of the way is to keep him and hope for the best next season and then the new CBA maybe opens a buyout window or in a worst case scenario there is a lockout and a good chunk of the next season is lost and they only have one year of his deal left after that anyway.
