Domi was a popular fighter because of how small he was, how much punishment he could take, and the fact that he took on all comers.

But he lost more fights than he won.

Against true heavyweight champions like Bob Probert, Dave Brown, and Chris Simon, he got absolutely destroyed.

Laraque by a long shot. If he had a mean streak he could put people in the hospital. He was probably the nicest, most gentlemanly top fighter ever to play in the NHL.

Probert was old and washed up by his standards by the time Laraque came into the league. In his "rookie" (Laraque played parts of 2 seasons before that year they fought), hockeyfights.com has Probert as the winner of that fight. They also fought in Proberts final year in the league where Laraque was smack dab in the middle of his prime and hockeyfights.com has it as a draw.

Even if you want to disagree with some of that voting, there was absolutely no "mopping" going on by Laraque. Probert is the unanimous all time heavyweight champ, Laraque has that title for his era but he was not Probert

Laraque would have handled a prime Probert.

Probert, just like Laraque, waited until his opponents got tired. Laraque beat a roided up Twist who was twice as strong and threw anvils.

Probert was a great fighter, but Laraque and Behn Wilson in their primes were better.

If there was one player who could maybe have handled Laraque it's Matthew Barnaby.

Laraque with Domi and Brashear next. Ray was only good when he could strip down. I also agree with those saying Laraque could have been even greater if he was mean. He was a nice guy who could beat you up. If you took Laraque and gave him the aggression of someone like Shane Churla then he would be higher up the all time list.

Yeah. This is where it comes down to how you define "best fighter" i guess. Like, if it's a "win a fight for the title belt", Domi doesn't stand a chance. It's probably Georges.


But if you take the premise, "it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog"...Domi wins it, hands down. There was a reckless fury to his fighting that just oozed energy and that "spark" that fighting is often really about in the NHL.


It just depends on whether you're judging by an unofficial "scorecard" for W-L record based on arbitrary "decisions". Or whether you emphasize the impact and intensity of the fighter and the sort of energy it brought to the table. I lean toward the latter, as those are the sort of fights i enjoy more. But i can certainly see how framed differently, the answer is clearly one of the true "heavyweights" here.
