I have the impression that one guy on the coaching staff didn't really want Gretzky on the team...
Crawford? Why him? Other than the fact that he didn't put Gretzky in the shootout in 1998 (I always thought at the very least Yzerman and Recchi were more likely to score at this time) I don't know why in 1996 he'd be against Gretzky. I know Sather on the first day of camp reportedly came into the dressing room and said something along the lines of "Gretzky is the captain, does anyone have a problem with that?" So you have to wonder why Slats didn't give Gretzky some better linemates.
