Tables of Stats 2023-24 Canucks Points Predictions

As always these stats are derived from the unweighted average of each player’s last 3 seasons across all the leagues they played in.

For most players, their games played are based on availability which is the average of their games played each season against the games they could have played. I included all levels they played at rather than simply NHL games as this stat measures durability and availability rather than my predictions about who will play. Dries and Rathbone have had games cut and players like Studnicka, Brisboise, and Irwin who will probably play games this season aren’t on the table as there weren’t any man-games left to give them.

Tables of Stats 2023-24 Canucks Points Predictions - Last Season Given Double Weight

The same as above but the stats from this past season are given twice the weight of the other two seasons. This will likely be more accurate for young players on the rise but less accurate for players who were injured or otherwise had down seasons but who should rebound.

Stats headings starting with p (Ex. pPPG) are my predicted totals based on the player’s last 3 years of stats.

Players with * after their names have some of their stats derived from NHLe for the leagues they played in outside of the NHL.

Hoglander marked with ** has his 2020-21 SHL stats omitted because he played a full NHL season that year and the SHL numbers would have been annoying to calculate.

I understand your methods but I also understand that if Pettersson only scores 60 points this team is screwed.
Yeah, 100%. This method doesn't work that well for players still on the rise and will tend to undervalue them while overvaluing declining veterans.

If I find the motivation I may double the weight of the most recent season and see how that changes the table.

I did the extra work and made a table with last season's stats making up 50% of the weight instead of 33%. I also corrected the mistake of assigning too many man games played to the defense as such Brisboise and Irwin are no longer included. I also cut Studnicka and gave his games played to Dries as opposed to removing games played from both players' predictions.

The empty columns are where I might fill in last season's stats for each player, but I'm unsure if that adds any value to the tables so I may remove those columns entirely.

A team of extremes. This edition of the Canucks has been outshot by 9.4 shots per game and has already been shut out and in spite of this, they've also scored 4 goals per game while only allowing 2.60. Some positives early in the season are Boeser, Miller, Pettersson, Hughes, Demko, and DeSmith all coming hot out of the gate. Kuzmenko seems to be warming up and Mikheyev is back.

Depth, especially on defense, remains an issue with no answer in sight.

Special teams have been better than last season with a red-hot PP scoring on 37.5% of attempts. The PK is middling but running at 75% is significantly better than it has run over the past two seasons.

In all, it's too early to draw any conclusions but starting the season 3 - 2 - 0 is something any of us would have been excited for coming out of the preseason.

Gonna be fun watching Boeser chase 100 goals in the season finale!

A couple of days late but life can be distracting these days.

The train keeps on rolling. Even our losses since that Flyers game have been games we could easily picture as wins. The top-6 is scoring and the bottom-6 is snakebiten but still generating chances. Friedman is solid and Lafferty is among the best bottom-6 players I've seen take regular shifts as a Canuck.

Pinch me. I this team perhaps more than a dream?

The stats are bit inflated by the sharks game.
Funny that you should say that. Aside from -0.20 GF/GP, -2.7% on the PP, and +1.7% on the PK; the stats have stayed the same over this 5-game stretch.

We're beating up everybody we win against and even our loses haven't generally had us being blown out.

This chunk of games was a step back for the team but we knew we'd eventually come down from the high of those first 15 games. The team is still in great shape in the standings and is lucky to have a cushion of points to get through slumps and injury trouble.

Of the Canucks wins they had 5 playing the, at the time, worst two teams in the league or worst performing at the time.
Of the 14 wins 5 were against Edmonton at their worst and San Jose. They feasted scoring goals too, of their 88 goals for, 34 have come against those two teams inflating their stat totals.

Take away those 6 games

18 games played, 9 wins and 54 goals. A 3 goals a game average, still very good but now a bubble playoff .500 team.

As it stands now IMO, 95 pts should be needed to make a WC spot, they have 29 pts so that leaves 66 pts in 60 games. They can almost coast into a PO spot now playing just over .500 points percentage, which is different than win percentage.

This season so far has been a reversal of the last two when they played great at the end, so far lady luck, the hockey gods and health have them coming out of the chute like a rocket.

This one's a little late, so as an apology have some graphs with your stats.

I'm not sure if graphs of total points scored by 5 game chuck are useful as visual aids for player peaks and slumps but I thought I'd try it and see if it's something people would like me to continue.

Since that heartbreaker against the Devils, the team seems to have found themselves again and it shows both on the ice and in the results.

The team just keeps rolling along. When the top lines falter, we have the third line step up with the much snake-bitten Connor Garland getting 6 points in 5 games while Joshua tallies 5. My only concern is that the PK still needs a little something to push it from the high 70s to the low 80s.

So with the mid-season mark fast approaching I'm wondering if I should make this segment six games long as I have always done, or if we want to keep the 5 game segments for consistency and just leave the last two games of the season on a bit of an island?

I know this isn't a thread for everybody but I'm always looking for feedback. If nobody has a strong preference I might just do both.

So we're currently on pace for a better record than the 2011-2012 Canucks and just shy of the 2010-2011 team. Those teams had the edge in goals against, but the league was lower-scoring in general (2.74 G/GP in 2010-11 vs 3.14 G/GP in 2022-23) and we give up almost the same number of shots per game as the 2010-11 team (30.1 then vs 30.3 now). There's a lot of hockey left but if the second verse is the same as the first this team is a legitimate cup threat.
