Well, given that this is a wrestling forum......

The 2017 Season has started in Tokyo with the January tournament and Yokozuna Hakuho winning his opening match as a highlight. He missed the September tournament due to injury and only two tournaments last year.

Also, this could be the year in which a Japanese sumo could reach Yokozuna for the first time in two decades. The favorite is Ozeki Kisenosato, who missed out on promotion due to not winning a tournament last year despite having the most wins (67).

First upset of the year as Maegashira Mitakeumi defeats Yokozuna Harumafuji after defeating Ozeki Goeido the day before.

The other Yokozuna's won their matches today, though Kakuryu needed the judges to reverse his initial loss to Shohozan (Shohozan went out of the ring at the same time and was determined to have touched the ground first).

The answer is Hakuho. He has dominated since Asashoryu was forced to retire.

My first experience with sumo was awesome. 2009 Jan. Asashoryu came back from injury and was dominating the tournament with a 14-0 record. However Hakuho, his biggest rival, was 13-1. In the final match Hakuho won sending the tourament into overtime. I was in an electronic store watching with a large group of people. You could feel intensity in the air especially when they started their ritual salting of the ring. It was getting closer. Then the 16th match, rare, as both men wanted it holding nothing back. It felt like it was going forever before Asashoryu made his final move to win.

The feeling is neither one like one another.

When Asashoryu won it sent everyone, including me, into a frenzy. High fives all around. It was spectacular.

Since then Hakuho has crushed the entire top tier of Sumo. No one has come close to challenging him on a regular basis like Asashoryu.

There was also an official scandal that really hurt Sumo a few years ago. They had an empty building tournament with no TV as punishment.

When I went to see it live in 2012 the building was 1/3 full. When before it was packed.

For the Japanese there is also the fact there is no Japanese Yokozuna and no real prospect of one on the horizon. All current Yokozuna's are Mongolian. Which may also hurt the sport as it's target audience are Japanese people of a traditional Japanese sport.

9 Days into the Winter Grand Sumo Tournament (tournaments last 15 days), and Ozeki Kisenosato sits at 8-1 (first loss on day nine) with Maegashira #10 Takanoiwa (basically mid rank at the 5th tier).

As for the Yokozuna's , Hakuho has lost 2 in a row after starting 7-0 while Kakuryu is at 5-4. Harumafuji was forced to withdraw after Day 6 due to injury.

Kisenosato still leads the January tournament at 12-1 with Hakuho sitting 2nd at 11-2. Kisenosato got a forfeit win today as Ozeki Goeido had to withdraw due to an injury he suffered on Day 12.

Looks like it will be Kisenosato and Hakuho will fight for all the marbles on the last day.

Not a good tournament of most of the Yokozuna and the other Ozeki ranked wrestlers. Kakuryu withdrew with an injury after ending up on 5 losses for the tournment. Terunofuji and Kotoshogiku both will wind up with losing records (make-koshi) with demotion a certainty for the latter.
