giroux is more of a 3rd line player IMO...he has skill, can score points, plays hard and tough

good third liner IMO, we'll have to wait and see when he gets a chance though

I wouldn't call Giroux a steal. He will be an NHLer. But only as a 4th liner.

IMO, if you can get a good 3-4th liner at #213, its a bit of a steal.

Kevin Nastiuk for the Carolina Hurricanes is quite the steal, in my opinion. He was selected with the 126th pick in the 2003 Draft and has progressed very rapidly in the junior ranks. He has played on quite a few bad teams, but he has really turned his game in a whole new direction this year and is in consideration for one of the biggest breakout goaltenders in the past two drafts.

2001-02 Medicine Hat Tigers WHL 19 0 0 0 877 66 0 0 4.52 4 10 0 491 0.882 - - - -
2002-03 Medicine Hat Tigers WHL 42 0 2 6 2344 172 0 0 4.40 15 20 2 1186 0.873 11 0 0 2
2003-04 Medicine Hat Tigers WHL 68 0 2 4 4056 187 0 4 2.77 40 19 8 1573 0.894 20 0 0 2

This year he's 15-5-1 for the Medicine Hat Tigers in 21 games played. He has recorded SEVEN shutouts in this early season as well as boasting a goal against average of 1.43. He leads the WHL with a .944 save percentage and faces 25.7 shots against per game. His breakout started in last year's playoff race where he just went insane and stole quite a few games for Medicine Hat. If you haven't seen this guy play yet, i'd highly recommend it.

okay not to sound like a homer, because I even notice that alot of people are posting on him on here, but easily the biggest steal in the past few years has been Henrik Lundquivst. The guy is hands down the best goalie prospect in Europe and I was even suprised that he didn't make hockey future's top 50, he should have, but he hasnt gotten enough hype to make it I guess. However he's easily a top 10 goalie prospect and if you're feeling balsy, a top 5.

Good choices:

2000 Todd Jackson (DET)
2000 Eric Reitz (MIN)

I really doubt Todd Jackson is going to amount to anything.
For an older prospect, he's having some trouble with the AHL this season.

Other guys meeting the criteria from Detroit (Zero NHL games, drafted 99-01)

Grigorenko, obviously. Jamtin could prove to be a good checking line forward
Other possible NHLers include Stefan Liv.
Two underrated defensemen, IMO, are Alexander Seluyanov and Miroslav Blatak.

Konstantin Pushkarev seemed to be very popular during his round, 2nd round of the 2003 draft. :dunno:

A few Senator picks that could turn out to be steals.

Brandon Bochenski at 223rd overall in 2001. After three great years at the University of North Dakota (And getting robbed of a Hobey Baker ;) ), he is now playing great in the AHL and could turn into a solid sniper at the NHL level.

Jan Platil struggled last year in the AHL, but has been much better this year. He's nasty and his offensive skills seem to be limited, but he could turn out to be a solid 5th or 6th defenseman.

Another possible steal is Grant Potulny. He was great at the University of Minnesota for 4 years, but is struggling to find his niche in the AHL. Could become a 3rd or 4th line grinder.

His numbers with the Wolfpack don't impress me much and neither did his play when I watched him, just nothing special.

He's no Ryan Hollweg, that's for sure, this guy's got superstar potential. :yo:

I would have to agree with many of you here that Henrik Lundqvist would be my choice for the biggest steal from 99-01 without playing an NHL game yet...

Another guy with an outside shot at it is Evgeny Gladskikh... Vancouver got him in the 4th round, 114th overall in 2001 and he looks like he could be an impact player...

Another interesting pick in the later rounds for the Penguins hasnt been mentioned yet......

99 - 157 - D - Vladimir Malenkikh

Course he has to actually come to NA for us to find out if he is top notch or not.

Depending on how literally you define the word "steal," there would only be a handful of 2001 or earlier draftees who have played in no NHL games and yet are considered steals. Good prospects that go three full seasons (2001-02 through 2003-04) with literally no games in the NHL are rarely steals.

The criteria probably limit the list to players developing slowly overseas, perhaps some college players who attend all four years, goaltenders and project defensemen (who take a while to develop anyway). Most names on any such list would stretch the definition of a steal, in my opinion. Steals don't percolate that long outside the NHL with no exposure to NHL play, not even one game.

Henrik Lundqvist would be one of the few legitimate steals I would mention. Most others probably aren't steals, but wild cards.

2000 7th round 202 overall NY Islanders - Ryan Caldwell

Captained the Denver Pioneers to the NCAA national championship last season, would have made a run for a roster spot with the Isles this year but is now in Bridgeport. He'll be a top 4 defenceman with a ton of character.
