Jesus, Puempel sucks. I know we made the move for cap reasons, but damn... he's terrible.

They didn't trade for him to be on the Wings roster.

I know they didn't.

I was just checking to see if maybe he had some redeeming skill that could have been a lottery long shot to provide anything. There is none.

He's like Ole-Kristian Tollefson back in the Leino trade.

I liked Puempel a lot in his draft year, he actually looked like he had big time scoring potential before he suffered quite a few injuries and lost some key development time.

NYR fans seem to think he had a strong camp. He is a good late developer chance, given all the development time he lost. Likely just a scorer in Grand Rapids but still I like this move. Especially since for me it was made for Hronek who is hopefully a big piece for us moving forward.

Based on...?
1) Based on me exaggerating a bit. I opened up his stats and just kind of overlooked the very limited amount of games over 4 years he's played.

2) We traded Sproul, who isn't very good himself, for him so I inferred he was probably not that great.

3) and lastly, I do remember that the Wings basically punted on the draft pick that they could have used on Puempel in 2011 to trade for Jurco and Ouellet and just hadn't heard a peep about him since then. Admittedly, that's a weak narrative for me to be saying how bad he sucks, but I hadn't noticed how injury wracked he's been.

Didn’t consider the freeing up Hronek part... I like this trade 100x more now.

Although f***ing A, stop overloading the rosters so much.

It was probably a contract for contract basis. Teams aren’t eager to take on a marginal contract without letting one go. This is a great move for Detroit. Clears D and gives Svech and company another relatively skilled guy to play with in GR.

Nice. We needed this to open a spot for Hronek/Saarijärvi at Griffins.

Good old Kenny raising his head up again.

Funny how it goes. Ottawa traded Red Wings 1st round pick for 2x seconds to get PUempel at 24. overall.

We drafted Jurco and Ouellet with those picks.

Then we drafted Sproul with our own, 55. overall 2nd round pick. That goes now to Rangers for Puempel, a guy which was drafted with Red Wings 1st rounder. :D

To me it is more depressing as it shows 4 players that are not very good at all. Jurco, Puempel and Sproul don't look like NHL'ers and really Ouellet would be a 7th d or AHL dman on probably 28-30 other teams.

this is why getting overly invested in all our draft picks is not really advisable. I don't build our picks up in my mind... they are all failures until they have success.

No, all our picks are going to be like McDavid if only Babcock Blashill would play him enough on the top line!

Rangers fan here in peace (Lol..it's always funny to state that IMHO). Anyways...Puempel has a really nice wrist shot and is a pretty good skater. His problems are that he has zero physicality and when the game gets dirty and is about board work and cycling, he completely disappears. He is a pretty decent PP specialist as AV used him there on the second unit often last season (if any of you remember his hat trick against AZ when Mike Smith lost his %&%^^). He had a few concussions which slowed him down but he did some nice work.

He might develop into a Brett Connolly lite, 3rd liner who can get between 12-14 goals in the regular season but come the playoffs, won't be a factor.

Thanks for your opinion and your write-up. I appricate the insight.

To be honest, I hope Sproul works out. Hope Peumpel helps Grand Rapids.

Ditto, man. I was happy to see this trade. Even if he's a bust, I like that he's down in GR for scoring depth. I was always a supporter. I like those Petes players.
