The Maritimes
Pervukhin was always my favourite Soviet defenseman. He kind of gets lost among Fetisov, Vasiliev and Kasatonov, but was elite and consistent.

Also liked Kasatonov, who hit Gretzky perhaps more effectively than any other defenseman.

The other guy I really liked was Romishevsky, who doesn't appear on these lists. Really nice player.

Ragulin was excellent.

Tatarinov was very skilled.

Surprised to see Vasiliev grade out so well by this metric. Was it because his physicality was somewhat novel? I never found him to be as talented as some of the other names on that list...that said, I've seen him play exactly zero Soviet League games, of course...I can only go by international play and exhibition matches...

It's because the Soviet defense before Tikhonov was very weak. They were entirely carried by their forwards (and of course Tretiak). Vasiliev somewhat stood out compared to the rest. The Czechs were a notoriously defense oriented team.

I'm also surprised by Vasiliev, not that I really knew who his competition would be in the Soviet league other than Ragulin. I do find the defencemen the clear weakness of the great USSR teams.

I am curious from a Soviet perspective of what period would be considered the deepest on defence.

I'd say the whole Tikhonov era was quite strong in defense. If I had to pick I'd pick the early 80s.

Thanks god we have an expert here.
Not only it's true but it helps the pro-Soviet narrative. The Soviet forwards had to make up for their weak defense. People look at SS72 scoring numbers not realizing it was easier for the Canadians to score getting through the defense the Soviets assembled. I'd put like 7 Soviet forwards from the 1970s above Clarke or Dionne.

I added all info from my posts of the topic into the first post.
Now it a very good source for information about USSR D-men.
I'd ask moderators to stick it in the Historical resourses and Source Materials thread.

Ragulin took on Esposito in the 1972 Summit Series, and i stood for hours and hours over two and a half days back pre-Internet in 1996 in the Hockey Hall of Fame in T.O. (i spent a year there doing research at the stacked UofT library), to watch every minute of the Summit Series, there played then endlessly on loop... and someone described Ragulin vs. Esposito as "bear on bear" ... *chef's kiss*
