Kaut got drafted five picks ahead of Merkley in the 2018 draft.

MacDonald may actually be a pretty good get.

Honestly I really like this deal. MacDonald will probably step into the bottom pair and make it better. I’d put Kaut with Hertl and Timo and see what he’s got.

Kinda funny how Merkley requests a trade off of the team with the worst defense in the league and only two righties in the system, just to end up on the reigning Stanley Cup champions whose defense he will never, ever crack.

Mostly a ‘who cares’ trade, although I’d hoped to get a mid-round pick for Nieto.

Even with the injuries they've had I'm guessing he still starts in the AHL. Maybe not. I can't see him succeeding on the third pair of a team with Cup aspirations though.
