Definitely not the worst thing to happen given the Ducks situation if this is what goes down.

Fowler
Lindholm
Manson
Vatanen
Montour
Larsson

Youth would still be there. Would have liked to trade Vatanen for a young forward though. Could still happen I guess.

Good move for both teams.

It was speculated here a lot whether it would be something around a d-prospect or Shea Theodore straight up.

I think Vegas made the right move by targeting Theodore.

Youth would still be there. Would have liked to trade Vatanen for a young forward though. Could still happen I guess.

I could see the Ducks bringing back Eaves and holding on to Vatanen for the time being. What they did during the last quarter of the season when guys were healthy was impressive. Sticking with that is a good option.

Vatanen can certainly have a better season, and if he does it next year that ups his value and he still has 2 years left in his contract.

Stoner gone.. Despres gone.. Suddenly the Ducks have like 9M cap space. Eaves+backup and they still have room to work with.

That's definitely the best D core in the league.

Can someone explain why you would take Theodore over Manson ?

Murray could have bought out Bieksa/Bieksa waived his NMC and protected Manson before teams had to send in their protected-lists.

Manson was never, any under circumstances, going to be exposed for Vegas to take.

They came to an agreement early on, so Murray didn't have to do anything about Bieksa and thus Manson is there "exposed".

Getting Shea Theodore out of all this is a big win for McPhee.

Hypothetically speaking if there was no wheelin and dealin involved, Murray would've been forced to handle the Bieksa situation and trade Vatanen so he doesn't lose anyone important.

Instead, McPhee ends up with Theodore (and Stoner but they don't care).

Ducks would have left Vatanen and Silfverberg exposed if this deal had not been pre-arranged (8-1 instead of 7-3-1). Suprised on the value though.

Silfverberg/Vatanen

for

Stoner
Theodore

Vegas should be getting a 2nd/3rd rounder as well IMO.

Ermm.... no.

If there was no deal done between these two clubs neither Silfverberg or Vatanen would've been exposed. Vegas picks from scraps.

Giving up on Theodore hurts a bit, but there really isn't any room for Theodore in the top 4 for the foreseeable future: Fowler (re-signs July 1), Lindholm (2022), Montour (RFA 2018), Manson (RFA 2018), Vatanen (2020).

More interesting thing to me is what this means with Vatanen, as shifting out Stoner's salary (along with Despres buyout) has suddenly opened up a lot of budget room for Anaheim. Narrative would shift from Vatanen needs to be moved for financial reasons to Anaheim doesn't HAVE to move Vatanen unless it's for a good top 6 forward.

Anaheim is going to regret this. They should've just bought out Bieksa and traded Vatanen.

On the surface, maybe.

But then they also have Bieksa's cap hit, Stoner's cap hit, and take lesser value for Vatanen in a trade.

Definitely far from ideal.

Ducks are better off this way for the near future. Improves their chances to win the cup.

sooo....

1) Theodore gone + Stoner off the books + keeping vatanen

vs

2) Bieksa bought out + return from vatanen + having theodore + much lesser piece taken in expansion draft.

No they would not have. Trade Vats and get Bieksa to waive....then Vegas ends up with someone like Vermette instead of Theodore. The team that "wins" is the 3rd team that gets Vats at a lower rate.

Not sure why people can't see this.

Yeah, if we assume Bieksa was not willing to waive his NMC:

1) Lose a lesser piece like Kerdiles or Shaw + trade Vatanen for less than market value + have 7.25M in dead cap between Stoner and Bieksa

vs

2) Lose Theodore, keep Vatanen, free up Stoner's 3.25M cap, Bieksa still playing for you next season

I think this is a great move for anaheim, losing theodore sucks but we have larsson and montour... and mahura looks like another great draft pick by anaheim.

Keeping manson > theodore.... we also dumping stoner which frees up more money to help our forwards, and we will still likely move vatanen. Now we get to sell vatanen at full price too which is significant id think

Also good for vegas they get stoner and theodore on their defense
