Yes, but surely that suggests what Pinto did was more than just betting on non-NHL games.

Kane openly admitted to the same and faced zero consequences.
yea what im saying is with pinto a sports betting company had the full record of what, when and how much. with kane the nhl really only has that one statement. i dont think kane is required to elaborate any more and unless he does i dont think the nhl has much of case if the nhlpa fought any suspension.

There’s evidence of what Kane bet on. There’s evidence he was betting on sports.

Do you think he was being sued and lost without evidence?

cant find the court documents but the atlethic article just says he wagered that amount. doesn't say anything about it being on sports.

What do you think bookmakers are used for?

In January, Kane filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. As part of his legal filings, he claimed to have lost $1.5 million gambling "at casino and via bookie" over a 12-month span leading up to his bankruptcy petition.

These are just the confessions he made in his court documents.

What Shane Pinto did was so much worse than what Evander Kane did that he deserved a 41 game suspension that he won’t appeal. Meanwhile, Evander Kane is fine.

gambling not just sports either. besides it doesnt matter what any of us think it's what you can prove that matters.

Sure if you want to believe that Shane Pinto got a 41 game suspension for not betting on the NHL, which by the way isn’t against any NHL rules, then that’s your right.

We don’t know what really happened but we do know it’s more than the NHL public statement which is why no one wants to talk about it. We also know there’s other players with known and open gambling issues who faced no consequences.

Also, the NHL sends out this memo to every team after Shane Pinto’s suspension:

Friedman said players are being warned about the following when it comes to gambling:

• Don’t share your account.

• Don’t place bets with third parties.

• If you do a prop, it’ll be treated the same as betting on a hockey game.

• Don’t joke about odds with friends. “If you have a friend text you and says, ‘You’re plus-300 to score tonight.’ Tell him not to do stuff like that,” Friedman said.

• Don’t share insight on injury information.

• Don’t bet illegally, like with a bookmaker.

Friedman added that there will be Zoom calls between the players and the NHLPA this week to discuss the topic further.

A memo sent in March 2022 reminded all league and club personnel — including players — that wagering on any NHL game, even where legal, is “absolutely prohibited,” and will “constitute conduct that is dishonourable, prejudicial to, or against the welfare of the League or the game of hockey” under the NHL’s constitution.

It doesn’t add up. If those are the rules than Evander Kane should also be suspended for using bookies which he admitted to?

i think it just comes down to most players being smart enough to use bookies.

Using bookies is allegedly illegal in the NHL.

NHL Memo:

• Don’t bet illegally, like with a bookmaker.

The entire memo the NHL sent out after Shane Pinto’s suspension was basically don’t bet on hockey - which Shane Pinto allegedly didn’t - which is why the explanation makes zero sense.

LOL, the conspiracy theorist mindset. It's not a matter of "belief", dude. Bettman clearly stated it was not because Pinto bet on NHL games. Do you honestly think Bettman, a seasoned lawyer, would risk his and the NHL's reputation and lie about this to the press, in collusion with the PA? Use your bloody head. Why are you ignoring the possibility that he shared his account, or any other reason in the NHL memo?

I'll never understand conspiracy theorists, who jump to the most negative of conclusions based on zero evidence. It's a shame that logic is not a required course in high school.

Then why didn't Evander Kane get suspended for publicly admitting to betting on non-NHL sports?

Really not a big leap.

Bettman, the same person who said the Blackhawks did nothing wrong and the the NHL investigated the Hockey Canada situation and found no wrongdoing isn't really the beacon of truth.

With OTT up against the cap, who takes a multi year offer sheet to grab this kid?

I think a 3 year x 5 mill offer is pretty reasonable for a good young two way centre, and COULD Ottawa even match it with their cap situation?

I would bet on it

To answer the OP, there is no conceivable Offer Sheet that gets him. He is a priority

Isn't placing bets on behalf of someone else acting like an unlicensed bookie? That's why you're not allowed to be a cell phone inline at a sports book.

Oh I’d think it illegal, just saying people I know do it. I’m poor enough as is, don’t partake, and legally I’d say bad idea. Morally I trust my buds more than the legally licensed leeches, but that’s a separate thing. That’s kinda my guess, though- he didn’t bet on hockey, but maybe did something technically not ok, and so the league came down hard.

It would take a huge overpayment (e.g. 7 - 9M AAV) for an offersheet to work on Pinto. That ain't happening.

Depends what happened.

It's likely he gambled for/against the Senators with inside information. They wouldn't just throw a 41 game suspension on him that he negotiated down and gave up his right to appeal due to gambling without it being more serious than the league led on.

That said, I don't think teams care that much about his gambling past.
I'm pretty sure he'd be in jail if this was the case.

Bettman said he never bet on hockey, let alone the Sens, nice try though.

Next year Sandersons contract kicks in, plus guys coming off Ltir? Gonna be tight?
Capfriendly has Ottawa with around $12 mill in cap space with 16 roster players, so need 7 more players to fill out the 23 man roster. Pinto the only keep free agent to extend.

Plus, they have to decide on Chrchyrun. If they can't come to an extension, they likely have to trade him like they did with DCat. That is $4.6 mill.

Sens free up $1.5 mill of Murray retention. $1.8 mill of Ryan buyout, $0.75 mill from MDZ buyout. Get a $650K credit for White buyout, thus a net change of $1.5 mill from their $875K dead cap this season. That is $5.5 mill of extra cap room that they didn't have this season that is freed up.

Have to grossly overpay Pinto to get him via OS. Don't think NHL teams are doing that.

I rather trade for Pinto then go the offer sheet route.

We are going to have too many players that may be insimilar position is a few years.

Would actually be 18. With Norris currently on LTIR and MacEwan on IR they counting into the cap hit but not the roster size for next season. There's going to be some turnover but you are right about a Pinto contract not being an issue for the Seantors.

You must be Brannstrom's agent.

I'm not even sure Brannstrom's agent would ask for 5 million in a arb hearing.

You are without a doubt my favourite HF contributor. Everything you say is either toxic or so wrong it's humorous.

If he was betting on Ottawa games it would have been a lifetime ban. Period.

I appreciate the compliment.

I’m curious why you think Evander Kane didn’t get a suspension for admitting to illegally sports gambling 50 times a day whereas what Pinto did was so horrible it required a 41 game suspension?

Here's the NHL rules on gambling:

The most obvious point of confusion?

The line in the NHL statement, which said, “The League’s investigation found no evidence that Pinto made any wagers on NHL games.”

Article 14.1 in the CBA states that players can’t bet on NHL games, but there are no other gambling restrictions included in that document. Some individual teams may forbid staff (including players) from betting with specific club betting partners because of the language included in those contractual arrangements, according to multiple team sources, but beyond that, everything else is fair game.

Placing online bets on NFL or college football games? Swinging by a sportsbook during a road trip to Las Vegas to lay down a World Series futures wager? Conducting a Masters pool in the dressing room? Those are all fine for NHLers.

The teams know it, too, which is why multiple executives who spoke with The Athletic expressed a measure of frustration with the secrecy around the Pinto case. There’s clearly a lesson to be shared with their players here — but what exactly is it?

Sens have a lifetime Rent free card eh, still posting BS about Pinto, when the league stated otherwise, didn’t bet on hockey.

How about you talk about the offer sheet possibilities instead of 10 posts on gambling.
