Why so cheap for Young? Has he not produced or is it because he's injury prone or something?
acl tear in year 2, led to a poor year 3. They didn't pick up his 5th year option. He's been better this season, but wow, just a 3rd round pick at like 85 or later. Sweat goes for around pick 35. Leonard Williams goes for around pick 55 to SEA and a 5th (but with major cash/cap retention from the sounds of it).

They essentially got Chase Young for free

49ers have those compensatory picks.
SF created cap room this season with a couple of restructures. Guess, they are taking on the full cap hit for him. Thus, only a 3rd.

Cap charge to SF for rest of the season is only $3 mill. Wash eats the remaining balance of the $5.5 mill prorated SB for this season.

$3 mill is pretty small cap hit to take on. Seattle had to up it a round since Williams was due $10 milll and they didn't want to take that cap hit.

Well, that WAS a waste by WAS.

Washington is a dumpster fire with a reliably bad defense. Everyone knows this corps has no future. No QB, no LB, bad coaching in the pass game by Del Rio, Dline overrated(it was never Ravens good)

I came to NFL from the NHL world and I always (still) get confused by the values of these trade.

2nd overall pick, 24y old and feels like SF got him for free.

& that no one could have beaten this offer.

NFL, more free agents and more chances to improve your roster quickly. Quality is limited in the NHL. Thus players typically return more in trade.

Thus fewer trades in the NFL. NFL, big value trades for non QBs, such as Mack, J. Adams, Fitzpatrick, Ramsey (to LAR), Devantae Adams, AJ Brown, etc. that garner a 1st and more are a combination of age, contract, and production.
Mack coming off his 4 year rookie deal, needed a big new contract but was elite. Adams, Fitzpatrick, Ramsey, still had a year left on their rookie deal, so team got the benefit of a low cap hit for a year, maybe more. Adams, 3rd contract, but elite. AJ Brown, wanted a new deal and got one.

All of the players dealt at TDL were either free agents to be or had no more guaranteed money, thus the acquiring team could always cut them in the off-season for no dead cap hit. Young was the 2OA pick, but needs a new contract this off-season. Same as Sweat. Tagging a DE is over $20 mill cap charge.

The team selling the player has decided they don't want to pay the big bucks and need to get value before losing the player for free. As such, the buyer is only concerned if other buyers outbid them.

The new team may not keep the player because the player could leave.

The writing was in the wall for him when he was declined the 5th year option. He’s good but has he shown you much to keep long term?! Washington ownership/management said no.

That's the thing. Doesn't matter what your draft position is once you are set to hit free agency. It's about value for your contract. They didn't feel he was worth a long term contract and thus moved on. No Dead cap for 2024 as his contract expires, same as Sweat, thus Washington will be in position to add players in the off-season, thus they would not have gotten compensatory picks in return if they go and spend on free agents this summer.

The fact that Sweat went for a second rounder while Young went for a 3rd tells you what other teams think about Young now. Young probably will end up with a shorter term deal in free agency. Not a 5 year $100 mill contract. More like a 2 year pact for $30 odd mill or something.
