Zykov is the kind of guy that other linemates can make better. He’s looked bad this year, but he was also stuck on a 4th line with Marty Necas and Brock McGinn, neither of whom are going to be making guys much better at this stage of their careers.

Silly prediction: Zykov will be the next Sheary/Simon/Kunitz/whoever - JR will claim him and stick him right with Crosby. Take Sheary, Simon, Kunitz, or whoever by himself and stick him with Necas and McGinn, and I predict they’d do a similar amount of nothing.

What's the advantage or end game here for Carolina?

Team is flying out west next week. With two dmen injured and neither bean nor carrick grabbing the spot by the balls, it makes more sense to take 7 dmen (bean and mckeown plz) than 3 goalies if one of the 3 played his way off the team.

You also never know, someone might claim him and get this crap out of NC.

What are Zykov's main weaknesses? His speed and defensive play? Thought he'd have been given a prominent offensive role this year... boy was I wrong.

So basically you're saying is that you can take any good AHL goal scorer and put him with the best player in the world and he'll get decent NHL numbers.

very enlightening.

Doesn't mean we should keep him

I think Rod's gonna go with Rask - McGinn - PDG and why shouldn't he? It looks like the makings of a decent line

No, I said that was my prediction.

I bet he’d put up good numbers with Aho and Teravainen too.

I really don't understand your love of PDG. He's the definition of a 4th line plug/tweener.

I predict some coach will figure a way to leverage the dimensions he does have into a productive top-9 role in the NHL.

Thing is, Leaguewide the guys-who-don't-score-meaningfully spots, your 3rd/4th depth on a contender, 2nd/ solid 3rd liner on mediocre team, are shifting toward speed. He'll probably get claimed, but I don't think he'll be very effective

Go Blue! Go Wolverines!

I don’t think he got enough of a chance this year, and it’s frustrating see Phil get plenty of time and not doing any more with it. Phil is faster and does the job defensively, and it’s the fourth line I know. It’s just we struggle to score and Z could be good on the second pp.

I think they saw him as a pp specialist who had to play well enough 5v5 to make it, and they made a quick decision against that.

He won’t burn us unless someone finds the perfect set up for him. If Ferland is out it’s ironic that the spot that put him on the map last year might be available.

Guess we didn’t do as well in that trade as we thought. Lame.

Someone made an offer for him probably, but it involved taking something back we didn’t want most likely. I think someone will claim him. If not, you know what he’s really thought of out there.

I've been on this a bit lately, but it's bugging me, so indulge me, please. IMO, there are very few instances of true chemistry between players on the current Canes team. Slavin/Pesce and TT/Aho clearly work well together, anticipate each other's actions, and become more than the sum of their two parts. But outside of them, there's not a lot. McGinn showed some chemistry with Staal last season. de Haan/Faulk seem to pair well, but I wouldn't say they have "chemistry" together so much as they are a stylistic "fit."

I see nothing else resembling true chemistry, despite Roddy keeping lines together in hopes of generating that which cannot be generated, and simply exists or does not exist.

The two guys I noticed over and over in the preseason who seemed to simply know what each other was doing, and were able to make anticipatory plays together were Zykov and Svechnikov. As far as I know, they have not spent one second on the ice together this regular season. There are a lot of things about Rod as head coach that I just cannot figure out. This is one of them.

I should’ve added to my post, this is great about Darling. He had one really good preseason game against Nashville where it looked like he was in Chicago. Meaning all his flopping around was at the right times and a bunch of pucks that seemed like they should go in someone hit him and stayed out leaving you with the feeling this guy is lucky. I’ll take lucky all day long if it’s winning.

That was it though, that was only big thing he did before getting hurt. He had some moments in games that were awesome since he came back, and he looks much better than last year but he’s still to fragile and leaky at bad times. The team doesn’t play well in front of him. If he crushes it in Charlotte great. They told us when they had a definite pecking order they would send someone down, and they did. Good enough.

It seems a bit weird that the Canes couldn’t get a late pick for Zykov. Lesser players with worse contracts than him have been dealt for conditional picks recently.

Not that Sarah Civ has any real connections but she just recently said a scout told her that Zykov was very tradeable. Guess not.

Keep in mind, putting a guy on waivers is often a precursor to a trade. If the player clears, then the other team that's involved in the trade doesn't have to necessarily keep him on the big league roster.

I'm not saying that's what is happening here (I'd be surprised if Zykov wasn't claimed), but it is a possibility. With the Nylander thing coming to a head, perhaps the smoke is actually yielding fire and a larger multi-player deal is/was in the works. Who knows....

Soshnikov is on waivers the same day from STL. Everyone knows ahead of time when these things happen imo, so I’m curious if that’s a coincidence or not.

Also it’s an interesting day for all this to be happening with the Nylander deadline on Saturday. This cleans up the roster a bit, I assume leaving us available to be active in the next day or two whether it’s a trade or another waiver pick up.

Hoping someone picks up Darling (they won't).
Hoping no one picks up Zykov (they will)
Oh well...

Zykov is a complimentary player, but when you play less than 10 minutes a game with McGinn/Struggling Necas...There's not much to complement.

We've asked RBA to park Z's fat ass in front of the net on the PP and in the few times it happened I thought he looked ok ~ good. For sure he looked better than Staal or Williams.

Someone will pick him and turn him into a decent 2nd-3rd liner.

All my excitement of Darling on waivers is gone seeing they also waived Zykov. He played well with Aho and TT last year, and like Kev said, seemed one of the only guys to show genuine chemistry earlier (with Svech). But let's not try either of those for as much as one shift this season when looking for scoring. He was completely misused and it's gonna hurt when he becomes a contributor for someone else.

This team doesn't seem to appreciate forwards who score goals very much.

Nope. Zykov will score more after the Canes than he did with them, just like Skinner and Lindholm, and we'll find some way to rationalize it. Because admitting that the team horribly misused the talent on the roster and gave it away, ending up even shorter on talent and goalscoring would be too much.

What the hell? You waive Zykov because he's "not getting enough minutes"? Well why isn't he getting enough minutes? Because you have him replace any of the grinder trash in the lineup? God forbid we waive Phil di Giuseppe or take McGinn or Williams out of the top 6 where they definitely belong. Put Zykov with Svechnikov? No if that happened Svechnikov might actually attempt some creative offense and get behind on learning how to be grinder trash.
